About the role

The Electrical Inspector position ensures that electrical construction projects in the unincorporated areas of Chaves County comply with New Mexico electrical codes and county zoning regulations. Key responsibilities include reviewing construction plans, conducting inspections, and enforcing local ordinances.

Responsibilities

  • Review electrical construction plans for compliance with New Mexico electrical codes and County zoning regulations.
  • Conduct electrical inspections at various stages of the construction process.
  • Create a flexible weekly schedule for inspections.
  • Request release for installation of meter from utility company.
  • Administer departmental filing system and keep financial, personnel, and statistical records.
  • Enforce County planning and zoning ordinances.
  • Work irregular hours at times and attend job-related training and meetings as deemed appropriate by the Planning Director.
  • Address and dispense with complaints concerning code violations.
  • Receive telephone calls and emails concerning questions of a general or technical nature.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Typical Qualifications: High school diploma or GED, three (3) years of foreman experience within the last ten (10) years, and technical, university, or college training in electrical construction (up to two (2) years).
  • Desirable Qualifications: New Mexico General Electrical Inspector and Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Supervisory Controls

This position performs under the general supervision of the P&Z Director, who may provide assignments and instruction, determine objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and assist the employee with unusual situations. The employee uses own initiative and judgment to perform work in an independent and timely manner in accordance with precedents and established policies and procedures.

Supplemental Information

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Integrity, professionalism, advanced field experience in Electrical Construction, comprehension of architectural and engineered electrical plans, statistical, algebraic, and geometric knowledge, hydraulic and floodplain development issues, excellent time management, organizational skills, attention to detail, multitasking, initiative, professionalism, poise, flexibility, initiative, professionalism, poise, and work within an environment of frequent interruptions, conflicting priorities, and varying workloads.
  • Certifications Required: New Mexico General Electrical Inspector (pass the NM General Electrical Inspector exam within three (3) months of employment and the ICC National Residential Electrical Inspector exam within six (6) months, and ICC National Commercial Electrical Inspector exam within nine (9) months of employment).
  • Safety Requirements: Compliance with all safety guidelines of Chaves County.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, squat, kneel, and crawl in tight spaces, good eye-hand and eye-foot coordination, adequate hearing for working on construction sites, clear and calm communication with the public and co-employees.
  • Work Environment: Indoors, outdoors, exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, odors, mists, or other irritating particles, exposure to slippery or uneven walking surfaces, using a computer in the office and laptop in the field.
