About the Role
The Coater Operator ensures proper production and machine operation by supervising coating department personnel, maintaining product quality in accordance with client specifications, and overseeing line repairs and troubleshooting activities efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Review and complete initial client specifications.
- Supervise all coating employees within the assigned line, including daily work schedules, assignments, documentation, and material delivery.
- Ensure timely and efficient repairs or troubleshooting of the production line.
- Oversee line operation, including occasional lifting/moving of sleeves (50-60 lbs, two-person lift) and continuous standing/walking on concrete surfaces.
- Perform physical tasks such as bending, twisting, crawling, squatting, and kneeling during line repairs or "web breaks."
- Work at varying heights (waist to shoulder, knee to waist, floor to knee, and above shoulder) during operations and quality checks.
- Climb stairs on the line machine occasionally.
- Operate machine controls and perform handling/fingering tasks frequently.
- Assist Coater Assistant and Coater Helper with tasks such as moving metal line shafts, lifting/moving cores (up to 40 lbs), and pushing rolls (3000-5000 lbs) on dolly-tracks.
- Operate a forklift to retrieve rolls as needed.
- Use tools and equipment including hammers, utility knives, wrenches, scrapers, hoists, computers, and electronic inventory guns.
- Spend up to 50% of the shift on computer and paperwork tasks.
Physical Requirements
- Lift/move sleeves (50-60 lbs) with assistance, carried a maximum of 3 feet.
- Stand/walk continuously on concrete surfaces.
- Sit occasionally for paperwork.
- Bend, twist, crawl, squat, and kneel occasionally during line repairs or cleaning.
- Reach between waist and shoulder height frequently; occasionally reach from knee to waist, floor to knee, and above shoulder height.
- Bend neck up/down occasionally for quality checks and data entry (up to 30 minutes at a time).
- Climb stairs on the line machine occasionally; climb ladders on specific lines (e.g., 505/506/509) to change filters.
- Perform handling, fingering, and operating controls with hands frequently.
- Assist with moving cores (up to 40 lbs) from knee to shoulder height on racks.
- Push rolls (3000-5000 lbs) on dolly-tracks, requiring up to 90 lbs of force to initiate movement.
Safety and Environmental Requirements
- Wear safety equipment: safety glasses, hearing protection (NRR 18), work gloves, steel-toe boots, armguards (during sampling), and Nomex sleeves (Line 507 only).
- Participate in safety programs: Standard Safety Orientation, Hearing Conservation Program, Lockout/Tagout Program, and Environmental Training (General Environmental Awareness, HAZWOPER Awareness).
Requirements
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
- At least 6 months of forklift experience or ability to pass a forklift licensing test.
Tools & Equipment
- General tools: hammer, utility knife, wrench, screwdriver.
- Skimmer, pneumatic table, roll pusher, scraper, splitter, dolly, electronic inventory gun, tape, hoist, computer.
Work Environment
- Primarily located within the MACtac Facility's Coating Department in Scranton, PA.
- Minimal variation in day-to-day task structures.
- Reports to: Shift Leader.
