Coating Assistant

About the role
The Coating Assistant supports the coating operations by performing tasks required to set up and operate coating machines. This role applies specific adhesives to a variety of release liners and substrates, ensuring full set-up and operation of both the wet and dry ends of the machine while maintaining a clean-room appearance. The shift schedule is Monday–Thursday, 6:00 AM–6:00 PM.
Responsibilities
- Clean the coating machine using specified materials to prepare for processes and ensure product quality meets specifications.
- Prepare raw materials (adhesive, solvents, additives, and liners) for use in the coating process at the assigned machine.
- Operate material handling equipment (lift trucks, hoists, platform trucks) safely to move and position materials; use safe lifting practices (heavy lifting/movements involved).
- Confirm job work orders and product process sheets align with material set-up; enter data into the computer system to ensure inventory accuracy.
- Perform complete set-up and operation of the wet or dry end, as well as all other coater-related machine functions.
- Assist the coating team in machine functioning to maximize quality, safety, and efficiency, including changeovers, cleaning, and simple maintenance.
- Prepare materials for subsequent jobs at the machine.
- Safely lift and position pumps (32 lbs.) into drums of adhesive.
- Ensure smooth shift transitions by communicating shift activities; arrive at the machine 10 minutes before shift start.
- Alert shift supervisor to any quality issues or machine malfunctions.
- Maintain cell and general department housekeeping to maximize efficiency and safety.
- Promote teamwork and organize the workstation for efficiency and safety.
- Make necessary adjustments and fine-tune equipment to achieve specifications.
- Align actions with Mativ’s North Star and Company Values.
- Ensure all operations comply with ISO Procedures.
- Participate in continuous improvement programs to enhance manufacturing processes.
- Assist the department and coating operators as required; perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
- Fluency in English (verbal and written), basic math and reading skills, mechanical aptitude, and ability to use measuring devices accurately.
- Good computer skills for data entry.
- Preferred: Manufacturing experience and exposure to machines.
Position Demands
- Work is performed indoors in a manufacturing setting with exposure to cold, heat, noise, and moving machines/equipment.
- Air temperatures may range from cold to hot; atmosphere may contain dust, fumes, and odors.
- Potential hazards include mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation risks.
- Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): safety shoes (steel/composite toe), safety glasses, bump caps, protective gloves, hearing protection, and respirators for certain tasks.
- Physical demands: lift a minimum of 50 pounds, work 12-hour shifts, perform repetitive tasks, stand/sit/hear/walk/talk for extended periods, reach/climb/bend/kneel/crouch/twist/balance in awkward or tight spaces, and have good close vision, depth perception, and focus ability.
