Coach, Alpha - $100,000/year USD
About the role
At Alpha, academic content is delivered through AI-powered adaptive learning platforms—no lectures, textbooks, or whiteboard instruction. Your focus is entirely on motivation and life skills, which are typically afterthoughts in traditional schools.
On a typical day, you’ll facilitate one-hour workshops for K-8 students on topics like public speaking, sustained attention, and constructive feedback exchange. The rest of your time is spent working individually or in small groups, reviewing Coachbot data, and driving each student toward 100% completion of their weekly app targets using school currency, leaderboards, and the trust you’ve cultivated.
Your performance is measured by three metrics: all students in your cohort meet their weekly app goals, all students pass the Test2Pass mastery check for every workshop, and 90% or more report that they love you. Falling short on any of these means falling short of the role.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate one-hour life-skills workshops for K-8 cohorts covering public speaking, sustained focus, and constructive feedback exchange
- Conduct daily 1:1 and small-group motivation sessions that drive every student to 100% of their weekly app targets, leveraging Coachbot analytics and Alpha’s incentive structures (school currency, leaderboards)
- Deliver the Test2Pass mastery assessment for each life skill, then re-coach any student who falls short until they achieve mastery
- Refine the workshop playbook and create new sessions as needed to ensure the same content resonates with both kindergarteners and 8th graders
- Serve as both the adult who upholds the standard and the adult your students choose to confide in
What You Won’t Be Doing
- Delivering whiteboard lectures, designing math and reading lesson plans, or grading homework (academic instruction is handled by the apps)
- Conducting standardized test prep or being accountable for class-wide test scores
- Managing parent conferences, emails, and complaints (campus leadership owns all parent-facing communication)
- Managing behavior for 30 students at once (cohorts are small and behavior work here is 1:1 coaching)
- Passively supervising students at computers (motivation here is active and interpersonal)
Requirements
- Willing to work in person at an Alpha campus in Scottsdale, AZ; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Dallas, Plano, Fort Worth, Houston, and Brownsville, TX; Springfield, MA; or Park City, UT (relocation support provided)
- Bachelor’s degree in any subject
- At least 3 years working directly with K-8 (elementary and middle school) students: classroom teaching, tutoring, athletic coaching, camp leadership, or youth program work
- Comfortable allowing adaptive learning software to handle academic instruction while you focus on motivation and life-skills coaching
- A personal track record of high achievement—academic, athletic, or professional—that made upholding a rigorous standard a habit rather than a posture
- Stage presence strong enough to command a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without raising your voice
- Legal right to work in the United States without visa sponsorship
Nice-to-have Requirements
- Youth athletics coaching, debate, drama, camp leadership, or after-school program work where you were directly accountable for kids achieving a specific goal
- Experience teaching social-emotional learning (SEL) or durable-skills curricula
- A student you can name who transitioned from resistant or disengaged to fully engaged, and the specific action you took
- Daily use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini
