About the Role
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the clinical services of the Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH). Under the direct supervision of the LTACH CEO, the CNO provides, manages, and supervises the clinical staff, ensuring competency, appropriate staffing levels, and the ability to meet the immediate and complex needs of patients. The CNO promotes the overall quality of nursing care while operating under the ANA Standards of Practice. In collaboration with the professional staff, the CNO plans, coordinates, manages, and evaluates clinical programs and services, fostering a team approach to patient care delivery.
Responsibilities
- CHC Values: Conveys CHC/hospital’s values and acceptable behavior to all stakeholders through personal actions. - Operations Management: Defines and implements operational standards, policies, and procedures for nursing care. Assesses, meets, and evaluates the nursing care needs of the patient population. Collects and analyzes data to improve operations. Establishes a single organized nursing service with an administrative structure and chain of command, ensuring all nursing services are provided or supervised by a registered nurse, with at least one RN on duty at all times.

- Safety and Quality of Care: Promotes quality by incorporating nationally recognized professional standards into policies and procedures. Encourages the identification of process improvements to enhance safety, quality of care, and patient rights. Integrates nursing services into the organization’s quality assessment and performance improvement program.
- Financial Management: Oversees the preparation and management of operating, special project, and capital budgets for nursing. Ensures appropriate productivity measures and supports revenue cycle needs. Meets budget-critical financial metrics and provides stewardship of all financial resources.
- Human Resources: Determines staffing requirements and ensures adequate numbers of competent, credentialed, educated, trained, motivated, and engaged staff. Directs performance management systems, including feedback, recognition, and addressing poor performance.
- Physician Satisfaction: Collaborates with the Medical Staff to resolve issues affecting nursing and patient care. Fosters open communication between patients, nursing, and medical staff to promote harmonious relationships.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited university program. MSN preferred or enrollment and progress toward an MSN.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of the assigned hospital’s location.
- Minimum of three years of direct patient care experience in a LTAC or acute care setting; LTACH experience highly desirable.
- Critical care experience preferred.
- Minimum of two years of nursing management experience (e.g., nursing manager, nursing director, CNO, or equivalent).
