CNC Programmer / Machinist

About the role

The CNC Programmer / Machinist provides timely support to Machine Shop employees by programming parts using CAM software. They collaborate with Machinists, Engineering, Routing Analysts, and the Machine Shop Manager to determine the most cost-effective machining methods, optimize tool life, and reduce programming and machine run time to maximize output and reduce costs.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the programming of machined parts at optimal cost using CAM software.
• Determine the most efficient process for making parts and create CNC programs for the Machine Shop.
• Select raw materials, cutting tools, and miscellaneous shop supplies for special parts requirements.
• Recommend and assist with the purchase of required machine shop tooling to improve machining efficiencies.
• Stay abreast of new cutting tool technologies and implement programming changes to reduce machining time.
• Review and implement cost-reduction ideas related to machining methods and tools.
• Oversee the flow of programmed parts according to priority and need date.
• Review daily machine shop priorities and ensure parts are programmed accordingly.
• Respond promptly to Machinists' needs to modify programs.
• Assist in expediting programming of parts to meet delivery due dates.
• Create and maintain setup sheets, including program and revision changes.
• Coordinate changes in CAM program parameters with machinists.
• Work closely with the Scheduler and Machine Shop Manager to expedite programming activities.
• Machine parts safely, efficiently, and with quality in mind, following priorities in Synchrono or under the direction of the Machine Shop Manager.
• Operate a variety of CNC equipment, reducing setup time and runtimes.
• Process expedited job requests not listed in Synchrono and document job descriptions and time required.
• Complete and submit machine shop time sheets daily.
• Maintain cleanliness and perform daily/monthly maintenance of assigned equipment.
• Keep machine tools organized and recommend improvements for future jobs.
• Collaborate with other machinists to develop best practices.
• Create fixtures to assist with production and maintain a log of those items.
• Work with the Machine Shop Manager and Engineering Department on design changes to improve manufacturability.
• Redline drawings to document changes.
• Operate a forklift on the assembly floor (if certified).
• Assist with training new assembly floor employees.
• Propose suggestions for improvements.
• Assist with setting up machines, crating, and shipment of machines.
• Ensure change parts and spare parts are included in shipping crates when required.
• Complete or update the assembly check-off sheet during the build process.
• Perform other tasks or duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of experience in a manufacturing environment with a thorough understanding of machining and CNC/CAM programming.
• Strong preference for experience with CAMWorks.
• Two-year degree in Machining or CAD/CAM preferred.
• Minimum of four years of experience running CNC 5-Axis Mill, CNC Mill-Turn Lathe, NC Mill, and NC Lathe.
• Experience with 3D CAD modeling software (SolidWorks).
• Able to read, understand, and analyze engineering drawings of piece parts.
• Proficiency in sound dimension practices; GD&T knowledge preferred.
• Ability to use a variety of measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, thread gages) to accurately measure parts and features.
• Able to effectively troubleshoot and solve machining problems.
• Good computer skills, including Microsoft products (particularly Excel); database management capabilities a plus.
• Must be able to stand or walk for the majority of a workday.
• Must be able to speak and hear to exchange detailed information verbally and non-verbally.
• Physical mobility required, including reaching, bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, and arm/leg extension.
• Extensive arm and hand mobility and strength to lift, hold, reach, carry, push, and pull parts, tools, equipment, and materials.
• Ability to see and judge distances and space relationships to complete detailed activities to fine tolerances.

Work Environment

Fifty percent of work duties are performed in the Machine Shop with exposure to tools, dirt, dust, chemicals, metals, plastics, varying temperatures, construction noises, and odors from production processes. The remaining fifty percent is in an office setting, performing detail work at a desk or working on a computer.

Tools and Equipment

• Familiarity with the operation of a variety of CNC-controlled machines, including lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, as well as manual saws, drills, and lathes.
• Ability to use general office equipment such as computers, printers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, email, calculators, and other related equipment.

Pay

Base pay: $35–$45/hour

Shift premiums:

• 2nd shift: +$4/hour
• Weekend shift: +$15/hour
• 1st and 2nd shift employees receive weekend shift premium for hours worked on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
