CNC Mill Setup Technician – FANUC ROBODRILL
About The Role
Atlas Fibre is seeking an experienced 2nd Shift CNC Mill Setup Technician to set up and operate FANUC ROBODRILL CNC machining centers.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate FANUC ROBODRILL CNC machining centers.
- Read and interpret blueprints and work instructions.
- Install tooling and establish work and tool offsets.
- Set up vises, fixtures, and workholding.
- Verify first article inspections and make necessary offset adjustments.
- Maintain quality and production standards while following all safety procedures.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of CNC mill setup experience.
- Experience setting up and operating FANUC ROBODRILL or similar FANUC-controlled CNC machining centers.
- Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T.
- Experience with precision measuring equipment, including calipers, micrometers, indicators, and height gauges.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Able to maintain tight tolerances in a production environment.
Setup Planning
Before beginning a FANUC ROBODRILL setup, the candidate verifies the following information from the blueprint, setup sheet, program, tooling list, material, and workholding:
- Tooling and work offsets.
- Vise or fixture indication.
- Material properties and specifications.
- Workholding configuration.
Setup & Offsets
To establish and verify work offsets, tool offsets, and ensure the vise or fixture is properly indicated, the candidate:
- Reviews the blueprint and setup sheet.
- Establishes tool offsets based on the program and material properties.
- Indicates the vise or fixture according to the workholding configuration.
- Verifies the setup through trial runs and adjustments.
First Article & Troubleshooting
If the first article inspection fails, the candidate determines the cause by considering the following factors:
- Setup accuracy.
- Tooling condition.
- Program correctness.
- Workholding stability.
- Machine performance.
- Measurement process reliability.
Tooling & Quality
The signs that a cutting tool is dull, chipped, deflecting, rubbing, or incorrect for the material are:
- Dullness or lack of sharpness.
- Chipping or flaking edges.
- Deflection or wobbling during operation.
- Rubbing against the workpiece.
- Incorrect geometry or material selection.
- Inspects the tool for damage.
- Regrinds or replaces the tool if necessary.
- Adjusts the tool geometry or material selection.
- Years of setup experience.
- Typical materials machined (e.g., metal alloys, plastics).
- Tolerances held (e.g., ±0.001" for critical dimensions).
- Experience with tool offsets, work offsets, and first article inspections.
