  • Tooling and work offsets.
  • Vise or fixture indication.
  • Material properties and specifications.
  • Workholding configuration.

Setup & Offsets

To establish and verify work offsets, tool offsets, and ensure the vise or fixture is properly indicated, the candidate:

  • Reviews the blueprint and setup sheet.
  • Establishes tool offsets based on the program and material properties.
  • Indicates the vise or fixture according to the workholding configuration.
  • Verifies the setup through trial runs and adjustments.

  • Machine performance.
  • Measurement process reliability.

Tooling & Quality

The signs that a cutting tool is dull, chipped, deflecting, rubbing, or incorrect for the material are:

  • Dullness or lack of sharpness.
  • Chipping or flaking edges.
  • Deflection or wobbling during operation.
  • Rubbing against the workpiece.
  • Incorrect geometry or material selection.
  • To correct these issues, the candidate:

    • Typical materials machined (e.g., metal alloys, plastics).
    • Tolerances held (e.g., ±0.001" for critical dimensions).
    • Experience with tool offsets, work offsets, and first article inspections.

    Machines & Technologies You'll Use
