CNC Maintenance Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 2/3)

This position is open for external candidates only and will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

About the Role

Prototype Fabrication (PF) is seeking a qualified Maintenance Technician to join the division's Integrated Logistics & Asset Management (PF-ILAM) team. As a member of the PF-ILAM Maintenance team, you will provide machine system life cycle support, including preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) for complex machine tools across eight manufacturing facilities critical to the laboratory's mission and core weapons and scientific programs. Responsibilities include:

• Performing new machine installations, upgrades, and retrofits
• Maintaining advanced technology for on-machine measurements of cutting tools and part geometry

Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($66,100–$103,600)

Take your technical expertise to the next level in a mission-driven environment. At this level, you will:

• Serve as a subject matter expert in CNC system maintenance, including multi-axis machining centers, mill-turns, and other advanced manufacturing platforms
• Lead complex troubleshooting efforts and contribute to root cause analyses
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to improve equipment uptime and performance
• Support the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as on-machine tool and part measurement systems, mission-critical maintenance, and advanced diagnostics

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on complex mechanical and/or electromechanical equipment, including CNC machine tools
• Troubleshoot, repair, and install components such as ballscrews, linear rails, gearboxes, motors, servos, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
• Diagnose and repair control and electrical systems, including PLCs, servo drives, CNC controls, low- and high-voltage systems, and sensors
• Read and interpret ladder logic diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings
• Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment to support multiple ongoing tasks amidst programmatic priorities
• Maintain documentation for installations and repairs using established databases

Additional Responsibilities for Engineered Systems Tec 3

• Apply working knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance on manual and CNC lathes, mills, and other 480V industrial machine tools
• Assist senior technicians with moderately complex installations, maintenance, and repairs
• Use diagnostic equipment and measuring devices to develop and execute solutions for complex technical issues
• Independently develop solutions to routine technical problems of moderate scope and complexity

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements

• Willingness and ability to work across both mechanical and electrical disciplines, even if expertise lies primarily in one area
• Experience performing preventive and corrective maintenance on complex mechanical and/or electromechanical equipment
• Skilled in troubleshooting, repair, and installation of CNC machine tools or similar industrial machinery
• Ability to diagnose and repair control and electrical systems, including PLCs, servo drives, CNC controls, and sensors
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting ladder logic diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment, demonstrating ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence
• Strong time management, organizational skills, and effective verbal and written communication
• Dependability, reliability, and commitment to long-term programmatic goals
• Ability to acquire and maintain certifications such as Radiological Worker II, Beryllium Worker, forklift operator, and crane operator (training provided)

Additional Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 3

• Working knowledge and experience with preventative and corrective maintenance on manual and CNC lathes, mills, and other 480V industrial machine tools
• Experience supporting the maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems
• Ability to assist senior technicians with complex installations, maintenance, and repairs
• Experience using diagnostic equipment and measuring devices to troubleshoot technical issues

Qualifications

Education/Experience for Engineered Systems Tec 2

• High school diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Education/Experience for Engineered Systems Tec 3

• Associate’s degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation

Work Environment

• Work location: Onsite in Los Alamos, NM (all work locations are at the discretion of management)
• Position commitment: 1 year of continuous service in the current role is required to apply for other Laboratory jobs
• This position requires a Q clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship (except in extremely rare circumstances). Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation.
