CNC Machinist - Milling - 2nd Shift

About the role

This role is responsible for set-up and operation of CNC machines in compliance with inch and metric drawing specifications. You will operate and perform set-ups on both vertical and horizontal milling machines, ensure proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools, and inspect components. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, occasional duties may be required at other Thorlabs locations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs set-ups on both Vertical and Horizontal CNC Milling Machines (3 & 4 axis)
  • Experience with Haas and Fanuc controls
  • Understanding of Virtual Gibbs and manual programming (G codes/M codes)
  • Familiar with the operation of DNC systems
  • Machines and/or fabricates precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries based on specifications
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design and dimensioning principles, including reading blueprints and geometric tolerances
  • Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in programming and overall machine operation
  • Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements
  • Measures, inspects, and troubleshoots dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications
  • Completes routine and priority tasks defined by management to ensure on-time deliveries
  • Performs periodic machine maintenance, including dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs using hand tools in scraping and fitting parts
  • Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas
  • Meets company standards for quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis
  • Adheres to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding workplace behavior

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a similar position preferred, plus training in CNC Programming
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience
  • CNC certification or CNC Trade School is a major plus
  • Knowledge of Lean Principles, including "Just in Time" and Setup Time Reduction, is a plus
  • Prototyping experience is a plus
  • Strong sense of ownership and work ethic
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high-quality standards
  • Ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities

Physical Activities

  • Work may be active, involving standing or sitting for long durations and/or performing repetitious tasks
  • Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts
  • May come into contact with potentially harmful chemicals or fumes (ventilation systems minimize harmful effects)
  • Work areas may be noisy at times

Pay

Pay range for this position is $27.00 - $36.00 per hour, depending on experience.

Schedule

Hours for this position are 3:45 PM - 12:15 AM, Monday - Friday. This position qualifies for a shift differential and a sign-on bonus.
