CNC Machinist - First Shift

About the role

As the CNC Machine Operator, you will perform a wide variety of manufacturing operations in largely self-directed settings. This includes setting up N/C and conventional machines, running multiple machines (mill/drill machines, lathes, presses, etc.), working to Work Station Instructions (WSIs), visually checking parts, maintaining records, and acting as a process change agent when needed.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate conventional or numerically controlled machine tools that require high skill.
• Interpret engineering drawings, change notices, blueprints, sketches, and method sheets of complicated parts.
• Machine all types of metals used within Wilmington machine shops.
• Check work during various machining stages with complex measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, gages, and scales.
• Perform precise indicating on parts where true indicator reading (TIR) is important.
• Maintain records, logbooks, charts, and initiate electronic or manual reports as required.
• Train operators on equipment you are qualified to run, on a temporary basis.
• Meet standards set by Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Assurance.
• Follow sequences, directions, and tooling call-out on method sheets.
• Achieve required tolerances and finishes to produce quality parts in the allotted time.
• Accurately serialize parts with the current marking method.
• Set up and operate B4C (boron carbide) machine equipment; maintain, alter, adjust, and make minor repairs.
• Manufacture B4C capsules for Control Rods, including mixing powder, determining density, and testing capsules for pull strength.
• Start up, load, monitor, unload, and shut down annealing furnace, autoclave, and nitriding furnaces.
• Anneal, autoclave, and nitride parts according to process equipment instructions; monitor furnace for quality and maintenance.
• Test cleaning solutions for specific gravity, alkalinity concentration (titration), and adjust bath as required.
• Operate all types of lifting devices and cranes associated with manufacturing.
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• At least three (3) years of manufacturing experience in set-up and operations of CNC machining processes or a 2-year degree from an accredited machinist training program that includes CNC Machining.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience with basic measuring instruments and gauges (scales, micrometers, dial indicators, and verniers) and understanding of Total Indicator Readings (TIR)/Full Indicator Movement (FIM).
• Minimum two (2) years of experience operating machining equipment (saws, shears, drill presses, punch presses, centerless grinders, small lathes, mills, CNC machines, etc.).
• Physical ability to manually lift moderately heavy parts (50-60 lbs) occasionally for short durations, with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Proficient use of basic shop math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and ability to use fractions and decimals to determine dimensions.
• Proficient experience reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints and drawings.
• Knowledge and proficient use of basic computer systems for furnace controls.
• Work location is Wilmington, NC (relocation assistance available).
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; offer conditioned upon successful completion of a drug screen (as applicable).
• Role restricted to U.S. persons (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology.

Desired Qualifications

• Minimum one (1) year of experience performing chemical testing and interpreting results.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in mechanical maintenance or mechanical manufacturing equipment setup.

Pay

This position is eligible for either a Machinist I or Machinist II role, with pay based on experience and performance on a machinist assessment:

• Machinist I: $35.36/hour, progressing to $37.27/hour after 6 months of successful performance.
• Machinist II: $38.25/hour, progressing to $39.17/hour after 6 months of successful performance.

Hires that pass their probationary period and meet Machinist II qualifications may re-assess to advance. A geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary may apply in certain areas.
