About the role
The CNC Machinist is responsible for setup, operation, and basic programming adjustments on CNC milling and/or turning centers to produce precision components to print specifications. This role requires attention to detail, comfort working in a high-mix/low-volume environment, and the ability to maintain tight tolerances on critical features.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC mills and/or lathes including vertical, horizontal, and multi-axis machines.
- Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and work instructions to determine machining requirements.
- Verify dimensions using micrometers, calipers, height gages, bore gages, and other precision instruments.
- Maintain tight tolerances (often within ±0.0001″ depending on component).
- Make tooling, offsets, and program adjustments using G and M codes as required.
- Run existing CNC programs with the ability to make minor edits for efficiency or dimensional accuracy.
- Machine a variety of metals (tool steels, stainless steels, aluminum, etc.) and non-metal materials as required.
- Work within a job-shop scheduling environment: high mix, low volume, short runs.
- Inspect parts during and after machining to ensure quality standards and print compliance.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.
- Collaborate with engineering, tooling, and grinding departments as needed.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Journeyman, trade school, or formal apprenticeship a plus but not required.
Skills
- 3+ years of CNC machining experience.
- Vertical and/or horizontal machining experience (4th and 5th axis a plus).
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (e.g., MasterCAM, SolidWorks, Fusion 360) is a plus.
- Experience machining tight-tolerance components for high-precision assemblies.
- Grinding experience (surface, OD/ID, or jig) is preferred.
- Ability to interpret and modify G and M code.
- Comfortable running programs written by others.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching.
- Ability to lift heavy materials as required in a manufacturing environment.
