About the role
As a Lead CMMC Cybersecurity Assessor (LCCA), you will serve as the senior authority responsible for directing and executing formal CMMC Level 2 assessments for organizations required to have the CMMC certification. In this role, you will lead assessment teams, validate compliance with Department of War (DoW/DoD) cybersecurity requirements, and make final determinations regarding certification readiness. You will oversee the full assessment lifecycle, including scoping, evidence review, technical validation, and final reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assessment Leadership & Oversight
- Lead and direct formal CMMC Level 2 cybersecurity assessments in accordance with the CMMC Assessment Process (CAP) and C3PAO standards.
- Plan and scope assessment engagements, including defining assessment boundaries, coordinating assessment teams, and establishing evaluation timelines.
- Serve as the Lead Assessor responsible for overall assessment execution, quality, and final reporting.
- Evidence Evaluation & Compliance Validation
- Evaluate technical and procedural evidence, including system configurations, logs, policies, and documentation, to validate implementation of required security controls.
- Assess organizational compliance with NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Level 2 practices.
- Conduct technical interviews with system owners, administrators, and security personnel to validate operational implementation of controls.
- Analyze IT infrastructures including networking environments, servers, virtualization, cloud environments, and user endpoints.
- Certification Determination
- Serve as the final authority on assessment findings and certification recommendations, ensuring all determinations are objective, defensible, and supported by sufficient evidence.
- Review and validate assessment documentation to ensure findings align with CMMC guidance and evidence requirements.
- Client Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the primary client liaison during assessments, facilitating walkthroughs, discussions, and status updates with organizational leadership.
- Clearly communicate assessment findings, observations, and required remediation areas to client stakeholders.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Lead and mentor assessment team members, including CMMC Assessors and junior staff.
- Ensure consistent interpretation and application of CMMC practices across assessment engagements.
- Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing within the assessment team.
- Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure assessments adhere strictly to the CMMC Assessment Process (CAP) and C3PAO quality standards.
- Maintain detailed, defensible documentation supporting all assessment findings.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of assessment methodologies, tools, and internal best practices.
- Stay current with evolving CMMC guidance, NIST frameworks, and DoW cybersecurity requirements.
Requirements
- Lead CMMC Certified Assessor (LCCA) certification required.
- Listed in the Cyber AB Marketplace as a LCCA.
- Active security clearance.
- 7+ years of hands-on IT or cybersecurity experience, including networking, servers, virtualization, cloud or hybrid environments, and user endpoints.
- Demonstrated experience with cybersecurity compliance frameworks such as: NIST SP 800-171, RMF, FedRAMP, ISO 27001, SOC, PCI.
- Strong ability to interpret technical and compliance requirements and evaluate control implementation objectively.
- Ability to lead complex assessment engagements and coordinate cross-functional technical teams.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, and ability to perform under structured assessment timelines.
- Team-oriented mindset with a commitment to collaboration and assessment integrity.
- Excellent analytical, technical writing, and documentation skills.
- Ability to author, review, and maintain formal cybersecurity assessment reports and technical documentation strictly in English to satisfy C3PAO and federal audit standards.
