About the Role

Responsible for operating the program(s) to measure prototype parts, current production problem parts, fixtures, and dies. The CMM Operator ensures on-time validation of check fixtures, off-shift repair of hand-held gages, and serves as an off-shift resource for floor CMM troubleshooting. This role involves coordinating and documenting data resulting from inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Use measuring devices including calipers, feeler gauges, indicators, micrometers, height gauges, PCs, pin gauges, optical comparators, and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) equipment.
  • Measure parts or fixtures using surface plates with gauges or other measuring equipment.
  • Validate data if measurements are perceived to be incorrect.
  • Interpret completed studies and offer recommendations for process improvement when necessary.
  • Provide raw data, charts, and feedback to the requester of the study.
  • Apply layout techniques and create measurement programs, both manual and CNC CMM.
  • Measure parts in "car" position or as indicated on program setup instructions, providing data in the requested format.
  • Measure check fixtures, verifying fixture and feature conditions, making minor repairs, and setting up as required by setup instructions. Monitor for unexpected changes from previous validations and provide data in the requested format.
  • Communicate error-free data using appropriate reporting methods.
  • Check fixtures or tools against prints.
  • Analyze capability studies.
  • Program CMM: interpret and debug part programs, create and maintain accurate setup instructions for reuse by other personnel, and document within the measurement program and CMM Layout Table Form.
  • Apply error-proofing methods in programs to ensure consistent, repeatable measurement between parts with variation.
  • Use measurement variables for both machine movement and data manipulation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including cleaning the machine and ensuring all tracks are clear of debris per schedule or as needed.
  • Support floor CMM users with programs and measurement methods usable by manufacturing associates.
  • Maintain the CMM to ensure it is functional and meets production needs.
  • Perform Gage R&R and enter data into Gage R&R software as needed. Maintain accurate and complete reports and interpret Gage R&R data to determine gauge acceptability.
  • Ensure completeness of all layout documentation per applicable procedures (e.g., Layout Request, Layout Log, Inspection Report).
