Responsibilities

  • Performs only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, as outlined under CFR 493.1425, 493.1495, and 493.1463, with a degree of skill commensurate with education, training, or experience and technical abilities.
  • Adheres to the laboratory’s procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follows the laboratory’s established quality control policies and documents corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and either corrects them or notifies the immediate supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using both manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines as introduced.
  • Performs and documents maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed) on instruments and equipment.
  • Reviews the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Recognizes age-specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensures proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and prohibits collaboration with other laboratories prior to reporting results.
  • May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients from newborn to geriatric age groups.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • In the absence of a supervisor, may serve as Lead Tech with responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

  • ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1423).
  • Current and valid state license if required by the state where the laboratory is located.

Pay

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $28.88 to $40.32 per hour. The exact starting compensation will be determined based on factors such as skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
