Responsibilities

• Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
• Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions for test system deviations.
• Identify and address problems affecting test performance, notifying supervisors as needed.
• Conduct a wide variety of laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in disciplines such as Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and others.
• Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment as required (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed).
• Review the accuracy of patient results before releasing or reporting.
• Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
• Ensure proficiency testing samples are handled identically to patient samples, with no collaboration prior to reporting results.
• Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics, as required.
• Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
• Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
• Serve as Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, overseeing the section or department during a shift.
• Handle responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Point-of-Care Testing (POCT).
• Complete other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

• Meet the requirements of 493.1423 Standard for testing personnel qualifications, including:
  • Possess a current state license if required by the state where the laboratory is located.
  • Fulfill one of the following:
    • Be a doctor of medicine or osteopathy licensed to practice in the state, or hold a doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
    • Hold an associate degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
    • Be a high school graduate or equivalent with successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks and hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
    • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent with documented training appropriate for the testing performed, ensuring skills in:
      • Specimen collection, handling, and processing.
      • Implementation of standard laboratory procedures.
      • Performance of test methods and proper instrument use.
      • Preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration.
      • Reagent stability and storage knowledge.
      • Implementation of quality control policies.
      • Understanding factors influencing test results.
      • Assessment and verification of patient test results.
• One year of hospital laboratory work experience is preferred but not required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, or meet other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
• Current and valid state license if required by the state where the laboratory is located.
