Clinical Trial Nurse (R.N.)

Provide treatment, monitoring, and follow-up analysis for clinical trial participants. Take health histories, watch for negative effects, and collect samples. Adhere to federal and regulatory requirements regarding patient information. Work collaboratively with team members and physicians. Identify potential clinical trial participants and oversee the process of recruiting those patients for experimental research. Ensure patients have information about the trial's potential benefits and risks and understand it well enough to give informed consent.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and ensure subject safety during trial.
  • Propose and negotiate alternatives for protocol.
  • Educate staff about the scientific aspects of the study.
  • Apply pharmacological knowledge to help Principal Investigator (PI) determine idiosyncrasies and unexpected results.
  • Evaluate adverse events (AE), intervene when necessary, and report details to PI.
  • Conduct follow-up to determine resolution of AE and report serious AEs to IRB and sponsor.
  • Present related information to the community for recruitment purposes or to other research professionals in a variety of settings.
  • Mentor and train new and subordinate employees.
  • Help determine personnel required to complete trial and develop the timeline for trial completion.
  • Review study-related data to assure compliance with study protocol.
  • Prepare emergency use reports.
  • Manage pharmacokinetic collection and storage.
  • Relate lab results to PI and sponsor.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance and calibration of equipment.
  • May perform bedside care.

Requirements

  • Requires the Registered Nurse (R.N.) credential.
  • Requires current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work.

Qualifications

Department may hire at one of the following job levels based on experience:

  • Clinical Trial Nurse (R.N.), I: Requires a bachelor's degree (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's degree (or equivalency). Entry-level position with close supervision and little latitude for independent judgment.
  • Clinical Trial Nurse (R.N.), II: Requires a bachelor's degree (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's degree (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience. Developing-level position with moderate supervision and some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Clinical Trial Nurse (R.N.), III: Requires a bachelor's degree (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's degree (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience. Career-level position with minimal supervision and wide latitude for independent judgment.

Equivalency Statement: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (e.g., bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Pay

$25.00 to $54.00 per hour.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some earlier mornings and later evenings may be required.
