Responsibilities

  • Patient Population (Clinical Only):
    • Engages in population-appropriate communication.
    • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
    • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
    • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
    • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
    • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
    • Interprets population-related data and plans care appropriately.
    • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
    • Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
    • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Education Component:
    • Identifies educational needs of associates with nursing management, staff development, and nursing staff.
    • Develops in-service and continuing education programs to meet identified learning needs by:
      • Assessing the learning needs of associates.
      • Planning appropriate programs and learning experiences.
      • Promoting active participation in policies, procedures, and standards of care.
      • Assisting with required nursing certifications.
      • Evaluating the educational programs offered.
    • Develops or participates in the development of materials to facilitate associate education.
    • Plans education for individuals or groups of associates.
    • Develops and presents educational programs and conferences.
    • Facilitates the application of appropriate theories of nursing and other sciences.
  • Collaboration/Consultation Component:
    • Collaborates with managers/directors to develop strategic plans in the area of specialty.
    • Collaborates with managers regarding clinical/educational needs that affect financial and/or labor for the specialty area.
    • Collaborates with nursing and other healthcare professionals in the establishment and implementation of goals.
    • Collaborates with nurse managers and staff to identify clinical activities that facilitate professional growth.
  • Leadership:
    • Provides leadership in the assessment, development, and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards of care.
    • Participates in organizational effectiveness related to the area of specialization.
    • Actively participates in organizational committees and meetings within the institution and community.
    • Actively participates in the Quality/Performance Improvement process for the facility.
    • Facilitates the maintenance of a clean, safe, and organized environment; uses supplies, materials, and equipment economically.
  • Consultation:
    • Facilitates nurse-to-nurse consulting processes.
    • Provides associate consultation.
    • Provides consultation to other hospital departments.
    • Provides consultation to the community at large.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Required:
    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
    • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio.
    • For employees working in UCMC Psychiatric Services, NCI-APS (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention with Advanced Physical Skills) Certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
    • 1–2 years of equivalent experience.
  • Preferred:
    • Master of Science degree in a health-related field.
    • 3–5 years of equivalent experience.
