Clinical Shift Manager - Emergency Department

About the role

This is a first-line management position with 12-hour responsibility for coordinating care for patients and families. Working with the area’s Operations Manager or Director, you will plan, organize, direct, and evaluate departmental people and activities to ensure high-quality, cost-effective patient care. The role includes fiscal responsibility for resources defined during the budget process and accountability for scheduling, coordinating, and maintaining resources on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

The primary focus is on employees, patients, families, physicians, and key contributors from other departments that impact department services. Success depends on your ability to collaborate effectively with other managers within the Division of Nursing and the Medical Center. You are expected to support and implement organizational expectations, including customer service, patient rights, confidentiality, a safe environment of care, and AHMC initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and oversee patient care delivery for the department.
• Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate departmental activities and staff.
• Manage fiscal resources as defined during the budget process.
• Schedule, coordinate, and maintain resources on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
• Collaborate with physicians, families, and key contributors from other departments.
• Support and implement organizational expectations, including customer service, patient rights, confidentiality, and a safe environment of care.
• Participate in organizational initiatives and redesign of healthcare delivery structures.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in Nursing (Bachelor’s or Master’s preferred).
• Minimum of two years of direct patient care experience in the designated area (consideration may be given for candidates with strong education and associated experiential background).
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Management style that is open, team-oriented, collaborative, and based on trust and personal integrity.
• Highly developed sense of initiative, flexibility, good judgment, and analytical skills.
• Current BLS-HCP certification.
• National certification in specialty area preferred.
• ACLS, PALS, NRP, advanced fetal monitoring, or NIH certification as per specialty area.

Reporting Structure

The Clinical Shift Manager reports to the area’s Operations Manager or Director. The Vice President, Patient Care Services/CNO is accountable for planning, developing new services, policy formation, human resources management, financial performance, patient care services operations, and medical staff relations within their area of responsibility.
