Full-time nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM with rotating weekends on CDH Medical Oncology (4A), a 26-bed specialized adult oncology/step-down unit affiliated with the NM Warrenville Cancer Center.

About the role

  • Care for patients 18 years and older with all cancer diagnoses
  • Specialize in inpatient chemotherapy and symptom management
  • Provide palliative and end-of-life/hospice care
  • Work on a highly engaged, cohesive, multidisciplinary team with daily reliability rounds to enhance patient/family communication and satisfaction

Responsibilities

  • Ensure appropriate assignment of care based on staff competency and patient acuity
  • Coordinate and monitor patient care to ensure patient safety
  • Collect, analyze, and organize patient care data for the unit
  • Oversee staff compliance with regulatory standards and adaptation of services to reflect age, culture, gender, race, nationality, and religion
  • Ensure documentation of key critical elements for patient care and national patient safety goals (restraints, verbal orders, abbreviations, etc.)
  • Ensure initial admit orders are received by end of shift
  • Demonstrate knowledge of staffing requirements and ensure compliance with staffing matrix each shift
  • Oversee accurate completion of daily charges to ensure unit receives all appropriate revenue
  • Contribute to cost reduction and support interventions that promote unit cost effectiveness (LOS, HPPD, OT, flexible staffing, and use of alternative skill mixes)
  • Oversee staff scheduling per unit and PCS guidelines; document appropriate staffing information and justifications in Optilink each shift
  • Check staff timekeeping and ensure compliance with time and attendance policies
  • Oversee documentation of occurrences on shift and report to Nursing leadership and risk management as appropriate
  • Ensure compliance with patient life safety standards including fire safety, handwashing, crash cart checks, etc.
  • Oversee accurate accounting of unit equipment
  • Demonstrate effective oral, written, and listening skills with staff, physicians, patients, and families
  • Keep all appropriate parties informed in a timely manner and understand "chain of command" accountability
  • Complete leader rounding on assigned staff routinely and consistently
  • Provide input to and assist with organization of staff meetings; conduct staff huddles on shift
  • Collaborate with educator and manager to ensure appropriate and complete orientation of new staff; identify appropriate preceptor and assign schedule
  • Participate in unit and PCS-based teams, work groups, committees, or shared governance councils
  • Ensure all RNs and PCs perform as a team to complete work on time and take uninterrupted meal breaks
  • Coordinate patient placement with Clinical Placement Nurse in a timely manner with a positive and flexible attitude
  • Display a "welcoming spirit" for unit by integrating students and resource team
  • Develop open, functional working relationships with other units/physicians by understanding complexities of different stakeholders
  • Promote an atmosphere of collective accountability for the Unit/Department
  • Perform weekend leadership rounding on all patients and assist Clinical Manager during the week as needed
  • Contribute to annual employee performance evaluation and be present when evaluation is given
  • Conduct formal staff rounding with assigned group of staff consistently at frequency identified by Manager
  • Follow up with all new employees on shift as identified by Manager
  • Contribute to completion of minor disciplinary action; may cover this independently with staff member under approval of Clinical Manager
  • Provide feedback to Manager for development plans needed for staff they lead
  • Demonstrate ability to coach staff effectively using leadership skills
  • Participate in interview process for candidates seeking position on his/her shift
  • Use retention strategies to recognize and reward staff on shift
  • Serve as Qualified Observer to ensure completion of annual competencies of staff on his/her shift
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives for unit and as appropriate for PCS
  • Display knowledge of performance improvement process
  • Support staff to incorporate evidence-based practice/research findings into practice at the bedside
  • Oversee environment of care and regulatory readiness with all regulatory bodies
  • Accountable for hardwiring evidence-based and unit-specific tactics for patient satisfaction (Hourly Rounding, bedside shift report, discharge calls, and AIDET)
  • Monitor for improvement of chart audit findings at employee level and provide follow-up
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • 3 years of RN experience required
  • Licensed RN in the State of Illinois required
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Telemetry competency required
  • Basic computer knowledge required
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing required
  • Excellent customer service skills required
  • Consistently works within the framework of the Illinois Practice Act for Nursing and ANA Standards of Professional Nursing Practice
  • Ability to assess and determine situations requiring an interpreter and to use interpreter services effectively

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • 2 or more years in pertinent clinical specialty
  • Certified Nurse (Cert NRN)
  • Specialty certification such as CV-RN, CHFN, CCRN, PCCN, CNML, NE-BC, etc. required within 2 years
