Clinical Preceptor/Lab Assistant (PT) - Surgical Technology

About the role

This is a semester-based, 24-hour/week non-tenure track position. The Clinical Preceptor/Laboratory Assistant supervises students at clinical sites to ensure completion of required surgical cases for the Surgical Technology Program, supports laboratory instruction, and assists with course activities to enhance student learning and success.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Clinical Coordinator to support clinical rotations.
• Ensure each assigned student participates in the required number of cases and procedures to meet accreditation and certification standards.
• Request resources needed for clinical practice and rotations.
• Maintain routine collaboration and communication with clinical sites; supervise clinical rotations on-site as needed.
• Report to the Surgical Technology Program Director weekly and to the Clinical Coordinator daily.
• Keep program staff informed of each student’s progress.
• Maintain up-to-date records of each student’s clinical rotations and evaluations; submit records to the Clinical Coordinator in a timely manner.
• Develop positive working relationships with preceptors at clinical sites and keep them informed of changing standards while maintaining professional behaviors.
• Assist instructors with preparation of labs, laboratory activities, practical examinations, and skills proficiency check-offs for Surgical Technology classes and open lab hours.
• Maintain current knowledge of the Surgical Technology profession, clinical skills, and educational methodology through continuing professional development.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including CAAHEP accreditation requirements and community service.

Requirements

• Highest academic degree in Surgical Technology education, an Associate Level Degree, or equivalent education to achieve Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credentials.
• Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.
• Minimum of two years of experience in the operating room scrub role, as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past five years.
• College teaching experience in healthcare or related fields preferred.
• Experience supervising and educating Surgical Technology students preferred.
• Familiarity or experience with CAAHEP accreditation requirements for Surgical Technology programs preferred.
