About the Role

The Clinical Instructor serves as a clinical resource for Surgical Technology students, overseeing their assignments, progress, and evaluations during clinical rotations.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns appropriate cases to each student when applicable or coordinates with the OR Educator/Charge Nurse to determine student placement.
  • Monitors student progress throughout the clinical rotation via weekly site visits or direction from the clinical site.
  • Makes themselves available to address students' questions and learning needs.
  • Exhibits professional behavior and serves as a role model for students while promoting patient and student safety.
  • Creates a positive and supportive learning environment, advocating for students' status as learners.
  • Makes systematic observations and objective judgments about student performance, observing each student individually once a week.
  • Completes a weekly electronic survey documenting student progress and provides timely feedback with suggestions for improvement.
  • Meets regularly with the Program Coordinator to maintain two-way communication between the program and Operating Room personnel.
  • Prepares a Clinical Evaluation Form midway and at the end of each rotation to document student progress.
  • Provides feedback to the program about current department/hospital policies, changes in practice, and suggestions for program modifications or improvement.
  • Participates in continuing education seminars and professional development opportunities to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills.
  • Attends two meetings per year with the Program Coordinator and faculty to discuss program goals, policies, and educational methodologies.

Note: Some duties may be delegated to preceptors at clinical sites, but the Clinical Instructor retains responsibility for ensuring these activities occur.
