Supervision and Mentorship

The Clinical Preceptor is responsible for supervising and mentoring US Colleges Phlebotomy students during their clinical externship at an affiliated healthcare facility. This includes:

  • Providing hands-on instruction in proper phlebotomy techniques, infection control, specimen collection, patient identification, safety practices, and professional communication.
  • Evaluating student performance through observation, coaching, and constructive feedback.
  • Ensuring students perform clinical skills in accordance with facility policies, industry standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Completing required student competency evaluations, attendance records, and performance documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Verifying that students achieve required clinical competencies and procedure requirements established by US Colleges.
  • Encouraging professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and ethical behavior in the clinical setting.
  • Fostering a positive, respectful, and supportive learning environment that promotes student success.
  • Communicating regularly with the Director of Externship and Director of Education regarding student progress, concerns, attendance issues, or performance deficiencies.
  • Immediately reporting any safety concerns, policy violations, or incidents involving students to the appropriate clinical supervisor and US Colleges representative.

Orientations and Training

The Clinical Preceptor is also responsible for:

  • Orienting students to the clinical facility, including workflow, safety procedures, emergency protocols, and departmental expectations.
  • Serving as a professional role model by demonstrating excellent patient care, customer service, communication, and professionalism.
  • Maintaining compliance with all facility policies, HIPAA regulations, OSHA standards, and US Colleges requirements.
  • Participating in preceptor training, meetings, and educational updates as requested.

Qualifications

  • Current certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent credential, as required by state regulations.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent phlebotomy experience in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture, capillary collection, specimen handling, and patient care.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to evaluate student performance objectively and provide constructive feedback.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA, infection prevention, and patient safety standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with healthcare staff and students.
  • Strong clinical judgment and technical expertise.
  • Effective interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive, respectful, and positive learning environment.
