Full-time, exempt position within the ACE Associates bargaining unit at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo.

About the Role

Works with the System Director of Pharmacy Services, system, and site pharmacy leadership to establish and maintain a comprehensive Clinical Pharmacy Services Program specializing in direct patient care areas such as Emergency Department, Critical Care, Infectious Diseases, Psychiatric Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care, Oncology, Internal Medicine, and select areas of specialization where pharmacy residency training is desirable. Coordinates and actively participates in programs and activities within their specialty and the Clinical Pharmacy Services Program. Provides educational programs for nurses, pharmacists, medical and pharmacy residents, physicians, mid-level providers, patients, and their families. Precepts pharmacy residents across the system. Assists in maintaining regulatory readiness and compliance with statutory regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical pharmacy services in areas such as Emergency Department, Critical Care, Infectious Diseases, Psychiatric Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care, Oncology, and Internal Medicine.
  • Coordinate and participate in specialty programs and activities within the Clinical Pharmacy Services Program.
  • Deliver educational programs for healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
  • Precept pharmacy residents across the system.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies and statutory regulations.
  • Analyze and interpret laboratory and microbiology test results to apply them to patient care.
  • Utilize hospital-based information systems, including Pharmacy, Laboratory, Patient Accounting, and office systems.
  • Operate ancillary patient care information systems in conjunction with patient testing equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other allied health professionals.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) from an ACPE-accredited U.S. school of pharmacy or a foreign school recognized by BPS and/or ASHP.
  • Valid license and current registration to practice Pharmacy in New York State.
  • PGY1 Pharmacy Residency in an acute care or ambulatory care setting required; PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in area of specialization preferred. Current residents accepted for application.
  • Board Certification preferred at time of hire and required within one year of hire (must be obtained through nationally recognized organizations such as the Board of Pharmacy Specialties).
  • Specialty-specific board certification (e.g., Emergency Medicine, ID, Critical Care) must be obtained within one year of eligibility.
  • Ongoing maintenance of board certification required.
  • Within 12 months of hire, maintain compliance with preceptor qualifications set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
  • All Pharmacy Residencies must be ASHP-accredited or have candidate status. Residency completion must be verified through a certificate or the ASHP database.
  • One year of full-time (or equivalent) experience in area of specialty preferred, accrued within the last three years.

Skills

  • Ability to analyze and interpret laboratory and microbiology test results for patient care.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for educating patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the activities of multiple personnel.
  • Proficiency in using hospital-based information systems (Pharmacy, Laboratory, Patient Accounting, office systems).
  • Ability to operate ancillary patient care information systems and patient testing equipment.

Schedule

  • Varied day shifts, primarily between 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM or 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with some overnight coverage (8:00 PM to 7:00 AM).
  • Weekend and holiday rotation required.
  • Floating to critical care, internal medicine, and emergency room units as needed.
  • Works unusual hours, days, and shifts to accommodate educational activities of the Clinical Pharmacy Services Program.

Working Conditions

  • Travel to various locations for clinical assignments, meetings, and educational programs required.
  • Works in a clinic setting with considerable periods of standing and sitting.
