About the Role

As our Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, you will be a critical, real-time medication expert embedded within our Emergency Department, providing immediate, life-saving pharmacotherapeutic interventions for our most acutely ill and critically injured patients. You will optimize drug therapy, mitigate medication risks, and lead medication management during high-stakes emergencies, directly impacting patient outcomes. You will provide expert pharmacotherapeutic consultation and direct patient care during resuscitations, trauma activations, stroke alerts, and other medical emergencies, making rapid, evidence-based recommendations on drug selection, dosing, administration, and monitoring.

You will manage complex toxicology cases, lead medication preparation in critical situations, and provide urgent drug information to ED physicians and nurses, ensuring medication safety and efficacy. Additionally, you will contribute to quality improvement initiatives, precept pharmacy residents and students, and educate emergency department staff to enhance the overall standard of care.

Responsibilities

• Perform all duties of a registered staff pharmacist, including online/staffing responsibilities (85% or more of time).
• Provide expert pharmacotherapeutic consultation and direct patient care during resuscitations, trauma activations, stroke alerts, and other emergencies.
• Make rapid, evidence-based recommendations on drug selection, dosing, administration, and monitoring.
• Manage complex toxicology cases and lead medication preparation in critical situations.
• Collaborate with ED physicians, nurses, and emergency response teams as the definitive medication expert.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and precept pharmacy residents and students.
• Educate emergency department staff on best practices and evidence-based medicine.
• Promote long- and short-range planning to integrate within the market, region, and systems.
• Work collaboratively with pharmacy peers to standardize clinical pharmacy systems.
• Develop, coach, and mentor pharmacy staff to maximize their scope of practice.
• Participate in assigned committees relevant to your knowledge, experience, and practice area.
• Ensure clinical pharmacy initiatives comply with regulatory requirements.
• Precept pharmacy interns and residents; may serve as Residency Program Director.
• Document clinical activities, interventions, consults, and patient teachings.
• Interpret medication orders/prescriptions for drug interactions, appropriate drug selection, and appropriateness.
• Accurately enter orders/prescriptions into the computer system, label, and dispense medications.
• Verify and check medications prepared by other pharmacy personnel.
• Communicate drug information to patients and health professionals.
• Resolve drug-related problems by consulting with healthcare professionals to achieve appropriate patient outcomes.
• Clarify unclear orders with the licensed provider and assist in appropriate drug selection and therapeutic regimens.
• Maintain a working knowledge of automated systems and provide direction to pharmacy technicians.
• Participate in the orientation, instruction, and training of pharmacy students, interns, technicians, residents, and other health professionals.
• Perform duties in accordance with regulatory and governing body requirements.
• Complete mandatory education at the system and department level.
• Provide patient counseling, drug information, and documentation as appropriate.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
• Residency completion or three (3) years of clinical experience.
• Active Texas Pharmacist License in good standing.
• Board Certification (e.g., BCCP, BCPS) required within 3 years of hire.
• BLS Certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• ACLS Certification issued by the American Heart Association.

Pay

$57.37 - $85.33 per hour.
