Clinical Nurse Residency Program - Leukemia Unit

MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Clinical Nurse Residency Program on G20 Inpatient Leukemia manages patient outcomes by providing, coordinating, and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care across the continuum of care. The team impacts quality of patient care, patient outcomes, and use of resources in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

About the Role

The inpatient Hematology Service provides advanced oncology care to adult patients diagnosed with leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, and mycosis fungoides. The healthcare team includes specialized physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, clinical nurses, and ancillary staff. Patients are typically hospitalized for supportive care during high-dose chemotherapy/biotherapy, cellular therapy, and symptom management, as well as re-hospitalization for treatment side effects. Care includes diagnosis, induction, consolidation, maintenance chemotherapy, symptom management, salvage therapies, immunotherapy, biologic agents, and radiation therapy.

Responsibilities

• Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.
• Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
• Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient, and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
• Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies.
• Participates in data collection for current studies.
• Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies.
• Documents care according to established standards.
• Accesses, inputs, and retrieves information from computer systems.
• Ensures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education, and coordination of services.
• Acts as a patient and family advocate to uphold patient rights.
• Trains, coaches, and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (or pending NCLEX date).
• ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (upon hire).
• PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (upon hire, if working in specific departments).
• All clinical nurses with less than one year of RN work experience must participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred).
• Less than twelve months of recent RN experience in medical/surgical or an acute care setting (preferred).
• OCN – Oncology Nurse Certification (preferred).
• Certification in specialty practice area (preferred).

Schedule

• Three 12-hour shifts per week (7 AM–7 PM or 7 PM–7 AM).
• Rotating weekends and holidays required.
• Minimum 1,872 hours per year.

Pay

• Minimum Salary: $68,000 USD.
• Midpoint Salary: $105,200 USD.
• Maximum Salary: $142,500 USD.
• $8,320 annual inpatient differential, paid $346.67 per paycheck.
• Certification pay and State of Texas longevity pay.
