About the role
The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) at Department/Unit: ICU-Surgical And Neuroscience - B2 provides specialized care to critically ill adult patients. The unit has a 50/50 split of neuro and surgical patients and focuses on patients with life-threatening conditions related to major surgical procedures, trauma, and neurological issues.
Responsibilities
- Supports on-unit procedures such as arterial line placement, central line insertion, external ventricular drain placement, spinal drains, brain oxygen monitoring, and more.
- Administers medications, starts IVs, performs treatments, and special tests as per physician orders.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients' conditions.
- Affords comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, and treatment of laboratory values, ventilator management, and hemodynamic monitoring.
- Collaborates with the nursing team to create a Plan of Care for all patients.
- Directs and guides ancillary personnel while maintaining high standards of professional nursing.
Requirements
- Graduate of a professional academic nursing program (Diploma, Associate Degree, or Baccalaureate Degree).
- Current NYS Registered Nurse license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
Qualifications
- Excellent communication, prioritization, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Knowledge of quality concepts, principles, and problem-solving tools.
Skills
- ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion.
