About the role

The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) at Department/Unit: ICU-Surgical And Neuroscience - B2 provides specialized care to critically ill adult patients. The unit has a 50/50 split of neuro and surgical patients and focuses on conditions such as major surgical procedures, trauma, and neurological issues.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and administer physician orders, medications, start IVs, perform treatments, procedures, and special tests.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients' conditions.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs for, and responses to, care rendered.
  • Apply sound nursing judgment in patient care management decisions.
  • Provide primary and emergency care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Administer over-the-counter and prescription medications as ordered.
  • Collaborate with the nursing team to create a Plan of Care for all patients.
  • Direct and guide ancillary personnel and maintain standards of professional nursing.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a professional academic nursing program in which a Diploma, Associate Degree or Baccalaureate Degree is conferred.
  • Must hold current NYS Registered Nurse license.
  • Obtain and maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of previous clinical RN experience in Med-Surg or Progressive Care.
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, organizational and time-management skills.
  • Possess knowledge of quality concepts, principles, and problem-solving tools and techniques.

Qualifications

Skills

  • ICP monitoring via EVD and bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion.
  • Placement of arterial lines, central lines, external ventricular drains and ICP monitors, SEPS drains, bedside bronchoscopy, abdominal washouts, tracheostomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement, lumbar punctures, chest tubes, pigtail drains, and others.
