About the role

A Clinical Manager is responsible for delivering effective laboratory service by providing an environment that supports the productivity, competency, and morale of technical and support staff. This person is responsible for all operations in their laboratory including hiring, training, scheduling, mentoring, and evaluating staff.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures staffing and training in their section, meets clinical demands and provider expectations for workload, including meeting turn around time expectations.
  • PARTNERS WITH MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST LEADERS TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE SCHEDULING AND TO MANAGE FLUCTUATING WORKFLOW.
  • COMMUNICATES UPCOMING CHANGES AND THE OVERALL STATE OF THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND THE MEDICAL CENTER TO THEIR STAFF.
  • EMPOWERS EMPLOYEES TO MEET THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE MEDICAL CENTER.
  • SERVES AS A LIASON BETWEEN THE MEDICAL AND TECHNICAL STAFF.
  • COMPLETES PERFORMANCE REVIEWS IN A TIMELY MANNER.
  • ADDResses EMPLOYEE CONCERNS AND SUGGESTIONS TO MAINTAIN HIGH MORALE.
  • ACKNOWLEDGES GOOD PERFORMANCE AND COACHES STAFF WHO ARE UNDER PERFORMING.
  • ENSURES ALL CORRECTIVE ACTIONS ARE PERFORMED WITH GUIDANCE FROM HUMAN RESOURCES.
  • SELECTS AND IMPLEMENTS TECHNOLOGY INCLUDING INSTRUMENTATION WITH MEDICAL DIRECTORS, MANAGERS AND TECHNICAL STAFF, ADDRESSING RELATED ISSUES INCLUDING INFORMATION SYSTEMS.
  • ENSURES TECHNOLOGY CHANGES ARE EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATED AND CONTROLLED.
  • PERFORMS VENIPUNCTURES, INCLUDING BLOOD CULTURE COLLECTION, AND FINGERSTICKS, ENSUREING PROPER SPECIMEN ID/LABELING AND VEIN PRESERVATION TECHNIQUES.
  • MANTAINS COMPLIANCE WITH ALL ACCREDITING AND REGULATORY AGENCIES (CAP, CLIA, JCAHO) AND DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC SUCH AS AABB STANDARDS INCLUDING QUALITY IMPROVEMENT TRAINING, DOCUMENTATION, PROCEDURE REVIEW AND REVISION, PROFICIENCY TESTING, SAFETY AND COMPETENCY.
  • ENSURES POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ARE IMPLEMENTED AND UPDATED AS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE OPTIMAL RESULTS.
  • DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR PLANNING, MONITORING AND MANAGING BUDGETS FOR MULTIPLE DEPARTMENTS.

Requirements

  • REQUIRED EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science / Medical Technology or Biological Science required.
  • PREFERRED EDUCATION: MBA, MHA, MPH or related MS degree Master’s preferred.
  • REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: 5 or more years full time experience required. 7 or more years’ experience with progressive role development highly preferred. 3 or more years’ experience in a related Supervisory or Managerial role required.
  • LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: ASCP certified generalist or categorical Technologist or equivalent accreditation required.

Qualifications

Demonstrates autonomy, critical thinking skills and has skillset required to oversee all shift operations. Capability and capacity to lead multiple projects and assist senior leadership with hospital wide and system wide high complexity initiatives. Maintains fiscal responsibility for department budget and possesses skillset to do so. Experience and high proficiency with computers required. Web based application experience, Microsoft applications including excel experience required.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate broad and comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex and/or unprecedented situations across multiple functional areas. Team Work: Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization. Customer Service: Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner.
