Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician is a valuable member of our team, providing clinical services to our patient population and following all laboratory procedures and protocols.
Duties
- Paraffin and embed biopsy, routine surgical specimens, placenta, autopsy and research tissue.
- Perform paraffin microtomy techniques, including using the microtome to produce 2-5 micron sections.
- Stain, coverslip, and case assemble all prepared histology sections.
- Follow all appropriate protocols for LIS systems: Copath, Ventana Benchmark, Ultra, Symphony, Vantage and Copath.
- Complete routine and special requests for additional levels, recuts, special stains, and immunohistochemistry requests, verifying each upon completion in Copath and documenting for QA purposes.
- Perform the battery of special stains and immunohistochemistry used in diagnostic histopathology.
- Rotate responsibility for the above and perform necessary maintenance of all laboratory instrumentation, including changing instrument reagents.
- Document QA documentation with regard to maintenance and temperature logs daily.
- Assist Pathologists by grossing renal, neuromuscular and biopsy specimens.
Qualifications
- NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist / documented eligibility including provisional/limited permit eligibility with relevant experience or NYS License as a Histology Technician.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- HT (ASCP) or eligible.
- Experience in renal, neuromuscular, and biopsy grossing.
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology, biology, or other life science.
Preferred
- NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- BS degree in biology, medical technology, or other life sciences, or an AAS degree from an accredited program in Histotechnology.
- Minimum one year Histology clinical laboratory experience, to include: Special stains, Immunohistochemistry staining, and Microtomy.
