About the Role

The Laboratory General Supervisor leads daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory (Blood Bank, Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Molecular, and Urinalysis). This role ensures lab services follow best practices with a focus on patients and cost containment, implemented efficiently. Assisting the Manager/Director, the Supervisor establishes and directs the laboratory's short and long-term vision, values, and goals. They manage quality assurance, education, proficiency testing, competency validation, safety, laboratory information services, and other administrative functions. This position supervises Medical Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and others as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Supervision
    • Trains, leads, coaches, and mentors staff to enhance employee engagement.
    • Schedules staff and completes weekly timecard management.
    • Responsible for hiring, monitoring, coaching, and providing disciplinary action to staff.
    • Manages performance, performs employee evaluations, and oversees staff development.
  • Operations
    • Evaluates, instructs, and assists in all sections of the laboratory.
    • Monitors and reports on departmental goals and metrics.
    • Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem-solve issues impacting patient care delivery.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures through daily duties.
    • Participates in strategic decisions affecting laboratory operations.
    • Maintains a broad knowledge base and handles problems in assigned areas, documenting corrective actions as appropriate.
  • Quality Management
    • Collaborates with the management team to update procedures and policies for staff.
    • Enhances customer service activities, follow-ups, and service recovery.
    • Responsible for the Quality Assurance program for the department; collaborates with Laboratory QA.
    • Ensures the department meets laboratory accreditation and licensure standards (State of Arizona, CAP, DNV, and other agencies).
    • Maintains excellent patient care.
    • Collaborates with other departments to resolve operational concerns/issues.
    • Fulfills the role of lead technologist as needed to support QA activities.
  • Compliance/Safety
    • Reports any safety-related incidents in a timely manner through the NAH reporting tool.
    • Attends all safety-related training programs.
    • Performs work in a safe manner and monitors the work environment for safety issues.
    • Ensures others perform work safely.
    • Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies.
    • Ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
    • Completes all company-mandated modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science field (Required).
  • Certification & Licensures:
    • Certification as a MLS or MT by ASCP or equivalent (Required).
    • Qualifies as a General Supervisor according to CLIA Guidelines (Required).
    • Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by their departmental leader.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory managerial experience in an acute care facility (Preferred).
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Banking, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Serology, Immunology, and/or Microbiology (Required).

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment, and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
