About the Role

This position prioritizes and performs a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests on biological specimens. You will review, evaluate, document, and report results while maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to lab safety and maintenance protocols. The role includes training and supervising trainees, laboratory assistants, and clerks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Employ positive patient identification procedures to ensure specimen integrity for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing.
  • Perform proper specimen collection (including phlebotomy), labeling, handling, preservation, processing, transportation, and storage.
  • Adhere to HIPAA and other patient confidentiality guidelines.
  • Prioritize lab orders (STAT, ASAP, routine, and timed studies) and perform testing in areas such as chemistry, coagulation, hematology, special chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, serology, immunology, bacteriology, microbiology, and referral testing, following quality assurance policies.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control checks; review test results for validity compared to anticipated results per procedure manual.
  • Evaluate the validity and accuracy of test results, recognizing interdependencies, physiological conditions, patient age, normal values, controls, linearity errors, instrument codes, and delta checks. Correlate results with diagnoses and question incompatible results.
  • Thoroughly document and communicate test results, expediting critical values to appropriate clinicians.
  • Dispose of contaminated materials and equipment according to policy; ensure work areas are properly cleaned after each test.
  • Perform equipment and instrumentation maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration; inventory and restock reagents, calibrators, controls, and supplies.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement evaluations and document adverse events using the incident reporting tool.
  • Orient, instruct, and supervise laboratory assistants and clerks as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological sciences, chemical sciences, or allied health technologies or equivalent: Required.
  • Clinical laboratory experience: Preferred.
  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license in the state of employment: Required in CA.
  • Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Labs (NCA): Preferred.

Pay

The estimated base pay for this position is $52.62 to $72.18 per hour. Additional compensation may include differentials, extra shift incentives, or bonuses. Base pay is part of a comprehensive benefits program available for qualifying positions.
