Job Summary
Performs and reports routine and special laboratory tests on clinical specimens to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients.
Essential Functions
- Performs analyses in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, blood bank and microbiology according to expected performance standards.
- Performs venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick on identified patients by physician's request in a timely, accurate and caring manner.
- Keeps documented records current regarding maintenance and quality control.
- Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
- Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, and specimen handling guidelines and procedures.
- Skilled in using applicable laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, pipettes, autoclaves, and sterilizers.
- Able to work quickly and accurately when under strict deadlines.
- Considerable knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical laboratory methods and instrumentation.
- Working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, laboratory medicine, disease processes, and laboratory procedures.
- Able to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected.
- Must read, write and speak fluent English.
- Must have good and regular attendance.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
- Licenses/Certifications: Current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a nationally recognized agency/board preferred. Current BLS preferred.
- Experience: 1-2 years acute care hospital lab experience in high complexity testing preferred.
Pay Range
$45.00-$57.00/hr.
