Responsibilities

  • Perform only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by California Bus. & Prof. Code and federal regulations, commensurate with education, training, and experience.
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions for test system deviations.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test performance, notifying supervisors as needed.
  • Conduct a wide variety of laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines.
  • Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment as required (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed).
  • Review the accuracy of patient results prior to release or reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are handled identically to patient samples, with no collaboration prior to reporting results.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • May serve as General Supervisor, overseeing the section or department during a shift.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

  • Two years of clinical laboratory work experience covering all areas of a clinical laboratory.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in biological science, chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, or meet other educational requirements as stated in California Code of Registration, Title 17, Section 1032.
  • Current and valid California State License as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (generalist).

Pay

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $53.64 per hour. The exact starting compensation will be determined based on factors such as skillset, experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
