About the role

The Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS) will work with the Ophthalmology and Urology departments to devise solutions that meet the reporting and analytical needs of the local community of UC Davis Ophthalmology and Urology clinical researchers. They will support clinical research projects by extracting complex datasets from Epic’s relational databases as well as other nonproprietary relational databases.

Responsibilities

  • Support clinical research projects by extracting complex datasets from Epic’s relational databases as well as other nonproprietary relational databases.
  • Perform all tasks associated with these data retrieval projects including requirements gathering, data retrieval, curation, validation, secure data delivery and accounting of disclosures.
  • Participate in evaluating and enhancing analytics tools and improving data provisioning processes.
  • Protect PHI in line with HIPAA standards which may include de-identification of data.
  • Architect and support data pipelines integrating sources such as RedCAP.
  • Coordinate with team members, contribute to project design, develop and manage timelines for deliverables, and provide both incremental and final documentation as required.
  • Advanced knowledge of metadata tagging standards and automated quality-control process development is essential.

Requirements

  • Obtain Cogito Fundamentals, Caboodle model, Clarity model certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Public Health, or Health Care Administration or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the analysis, retrieval and management of clinical data from a healthcare software system.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with standardized healthcare codes (e.g., ICD, COT, LOINC, SNOMED).
  • Expertise with various programming languages and software such as SQL, stored procedures, XML Python, J2EE, VBA, Shell Script, Excel, Tableau, Crystal Reports, and Business Objects.
  • Familiar with the use of secure file sharing such as SFTP.
  • Highly proficient in Structured Query Language (MS SQL and Oracle).
  • Working knowledge of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) applications.
  • Highly proficient in Structured Query Language (SQL); experience with query tuning and optimization.
  • Excellent analytical skills to develop and/or comprehend complex technical, clinical, research, and fiscal information; ability to absorb information to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience translating customer requirements into technical specifications and documentation.
  • Excellent organizational skills to determine and prioritize workload to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Identify and communicate problems in a collaborative, professional manner.
  • Ability to deal with highly confidential, secured, and financial matters and comply with HIPAA and privacy rules.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal direction in a dynamic and diverse environment.
  • Experience with various office software tools such as Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Oracle and MS SQL Server experience.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to convey highly technical information to all levels of clinical users in a clear and concise manner.
  • Able to use logic and flow diagrams to describe the functional processes of a system that both end-users and programmers can understand.
  • Familiarity with data governance and data stewardship principles and practices.

Qualifications

  • EPIC Clinical Data model certification.
  • EPIC Kaleidoscope data model certification.
  • EPIC Ambulatory data model certification.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Public Health, or Health Care Administration.
  • Prior experience with data extract from Caboodle and/or Clarity.
  • Familiarity with OMOP Common Data Model.
  • Familiarity with DataBricks.
  • Familiarity with visualization and analytical tools (Business Objects, Tableau, SSRS, etc.).
  • Utilization of ServiceNow.
  • Prior experience in the analysis, retrieval and management of Ophthalmology and/or Urology data from a healthcare software system.
  • Prior experience building data pipelines.
  • Experience with metadata tagging practices and experience automating quality-control workflows.
  • Caboodle Data Model, Clarity Data Model Ambulatory data model and Kaleidoscope Data Model experience.
  • Experience with OMOP Common Data Model.
  • Expertise with various programming languages and software such as XML, Python, J2EE, Excel, Crystal Reports, and Business Objects.
  • Previous involvement in quality improvement or research projects related to hospital operations, ambulatory clinical operations, emergency medicine, trauma, etc. with a focus on Ophthalmology and/or Urology.
  • Prior background with clinical Ophthalmology and/or Urology research projects.
  • Knowledge of healthcare operational practices and principals.
  • Practical application of HIPAA and privacy rules.
  • Awareness and understanding of University policies and procedures.
  • Experience building and support data pipelines integrating sources such as RedCAP.
  • Prior experience in image extraction from PACS and conduct de-identification using AIR.
  • Prior experience with meta data tagging and automating quality control workflows.
