Clinical Informatics Lab Specialist - Hybrid

This position is remote and can sit in the footprint of Providence in the states of AK, WA, OR, MT, CA, and TX.

About the role

The Clinical Informatics Lab Specialist is a subject matter expert who works independently to support laboratory components of the EHR, clinical decision support, and laboratory-specific information systems associated with laboratory testing. This role participates in a collaborative effort with key contributors and other informatics lab specialists to design and develop effective laboratory workflow, operational processes, and system functions to drive optimal outcomes and efficiencies.

You will support leadership decision-making through data gathering and sophisticated analysis, implement changes aligned with patient safety, strategic and regulatory goals, and communicate effectively with audiences ranging from clinicians to executive leadership and vendors. This role involves developing and maintaining close relationships with key contributors, including system and operational leadership, frontline staff, governance groups, multidisciplinary teams, and vendors.

Frequent travel among facilities is required, with occasional travel among PSJH regions. A valid driver’s license, car license, and reliable vehicle are required for transportation. The role may include on-call duties, after-hours work, variable shifts, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical and application expertise, recommending processes or procedures for enhancements and modifications to improve existing laboratory information systems.
• Respond to improvement needs in the functional operation of laboratory computer systems.
• Collaborate and document system design and workflow processes for clinical and laboratory management, staff, and providers.
• Function as a liaison between laboratory stakeholders and system build teams.
• Design, analyze, and optimize clinical and laboratory information systems to achieve Health System objectives of standardization, integration, and efficiency while supporting compliance with policies, procedures, legal, and regulatory requirements.
• Share knowledge and expertise with team members.
• Collaborate with the education team to develop change communication and training materials, obtaining approval where required.
• Perform routine maintenance, assist with testing updates, and evaluate new releases prior to production use.
• Demonstrate compliance with all system and departmental policies and procedures, including annual safety and competency testing.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Informatics, Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3 or more years of related experience.
• Broad knowledge and understanding of trends and changes in healthcare.
• Knowledge of health information technology to improve laboratory and related processes (e.g., electronic medical records, laboratory information systems, CPOE, laboratory-provider links).
• Ability to work within tight time frames and meet strict deadlines.
• Effective written communication skills tailored to the needs of the audience.
• Ability to build relationships with customers, executive management, and stakeholders through positive interaction and problem resolution.
• Using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Training in laboratory informatics/administration or equivalent.
• Certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician upon hire.
• 1 year of experience with technology-related certification and proficiency.

  • Except Great Falls: $32.29 – $50.13 per hour
  • Great Falls: $30.59 – $47.49 per hour

  • Non-Portland Service Area: $37.39 – $58.05 per hour
  • Portland Service Area: $40.11 – $62.27 per hour

These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
