About the role
Completes nutrition-focused physical assessments, takes measurements, reviews medical records, collects data via interviews, and evaluates anthropometric status.
Evaluates assessment data to identify nutrition risks, nutrition problems, criteria consistent with malnutrition, knowledge deficits, and high-risk health behaviors.
Offers nutrition interventions, orders, education, counseling, and referrals to other services.
May place feeding tubes or perform indirect calorimetry studies.
Provides counseling and education using evidence-based techniques that reflect appropriate health literacy and cultural sensitivity to patients with disease processes requiring nutritional management.
Maintains and evaluates nutrition care plans to reach nutrition goals and promote optimal outcomes.
Supervises practice experience for dietetic interns, dietetic technicians, registration eligible dietitians and new employees, participates in research, performance improvement, and initiatives.
Enters complete, accurate, and timely electronic health record documentation.
Enters nutrition orders when authorized by Medical Staff policy and procedure to reflect patient care.
Participates in patient care rounds, collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to create nutrition plans of care.
Promotes evidence-based nutrition care and makes expertise available to foodservice areas.
Provides timely responses to internal electronic communication.
Responsibilities
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and have good comprehension of conversational English
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy
- General knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, e-mail, and spreadsheet software
- Ability to search the web for nutrition research or practice updates and apply knowledge to updating reference materials, preparing for presentations, education, etc.
- Avails self to staff on units as the nutrition expert
- Performs Meal Test Trays 3 times per month (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
- Attends interdisciplinary meetings and rounds on assigned units as scheduled unless valid excuse demonstrated
- Attends assigned team and/or committee meetings unless valid excuse demonstrated
- Assists in regulatory survey preparation when applicable
- Reviews and/or updates department resource/reference materials when applicable or required
- Identifies specific patient or staff needs, initiates and develops educational or clinical materials then evaluates outcomes
- Affirms that care delivered to each patient is in accordance with established standards
- Skill and knowledge in working with an electronic health record system
- Analyzes and interprets reliable assessment data to identify an actual occurrence, risk of, or potential for developing a nutrition problem
- Nutrition Diagnoses/Problems are included on the patient care plan and updated as more data becomes available, or signed off as applicable
- Provides appropriate intervention in accordance with the identified patient’s goals
- Identifies and follows through with potential complex discharge planning needs, intervenes early to promote timely attainment of goals
- Adheres to reassessment timeframe per standards
- Reassesses and updates nutrition care process and implement changes as indicated
- Complies with National Patient Safety Goals regarding abbreviation usage, patient identification
- Assessment, interventions, and procedures utilizing equipment are appropriate for the age group
- Understands indications for nutrition support therapy (both enteral and parenteral) and applies recommendations appropriately
Qualifications
- Education
- Education: Bachelor's [Required]
- Master's [Required]
- Field Of Study: of Divinity degree of Science in Spiritual Care or other graduate level degree (72-hour minimum) in theology, religion or related field
- Experience
- Work Experience: 3+ experience in a clinical setting [Required]
- Didactic program with strong focus in clinical nutrition [Preferred]
