Clinical Dietitian

About the Role

As a patient-focused organization, University of Utah Health seeks a Clinical Dietitian to join our team. This role works with the departmental and interdisciplinary health care team to provide patient care that is integrated and compatible with patient-centered medical goals and objectives. The position is responsible for assessing nutritional status, identifying nutrition concerns, and developing, implementing, and evaluating outcomes of nutrition care plans for patients at nutritional risk.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments by collecting, recording, and interpreting data from patients, family members, caregivers, and other sources.
• Organize and categorize data to link nutrition assessment parameters with nutrition diagnoses and determine when consultation or referral is needed.
• Formulate and prioritize nutrition intervention plans based on evidence-based practice guidelines.
• Monitor and measure outcomes, comparing findings with intervention goals to assess effectiveness.
• Provide nutrition counseling and education to patients, families, caregivers, and the community.
• Ensure compliance with state and local health, safety, and quality standards.
• Conduct in-services and educational presentations for staff and develop patient education materials.
• Act as a liaison with nursing and medical staff to enhance patient nutritional care, education, and research opportunities.
• Participate in outcome measure initiatives and create reports to validate nutrition program performance.
• Maintain accurate records of daily clinical activities, including scheduling and billing information.
• Participate in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects.
• Manage training programs for nutrition and dietetics interns and other healthcare profession students.
• May manage total parenteral nutrition macronutrient calculations for specialized populations.
• May conduct or collaborate in nutrition research.
• May enter nutrition-related orders as defined by University of Utah protocols.

Qualifications

• Registered Dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
• Current License to practice as a Certified Dietitian in the State of Utah.
• Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of clinical/practical experience.
• Nutrition Focused Physical Exam (NFPE) Training.
• Current CNSC (Certified Nutrition Support Clinician).

• Computer literacy in word processing, nutrient analysis, and spreadsheet software.
• Effective communication and education skills.
• Knowledge of nutrition-related order entry and patient care alignment.
• Understanding of HIPAA regulations and patient/client protected health information.
• Advanced knowledge of human physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, food chemistry, and dietary analysis.
• Familiarity with CMS Conditions of Participation and Conditions of Coverage.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require activities such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment. Physical requirements include carrying, climbing, color determination, far and near vision, lifting, listening, manual dexterity, pulling and/or pushing, reaching, sitting, speaking, standing, stooping and crouching, tasting or smelling, and walking.
