About the role

The clinical abstraction specialist will apply their knowledge of healthcare and data management to analyze clinical data, identify trends, and report them. They will abstract and maintain comprehensive data from clinical records according to established clinical/regulatory requirements, mitigate definitional issues, and resolve chart documentation discrepancies to ensure timely completion and proper validation checks for a high level of interrater reliability.

Responsibilities

• Disseminate data from the medical record accurately reflecting governing body’s rules, algorithms, and protocols
• Continuously learn and adapt due to registry and regulatory changes
• Support collaboration with internal team members and external vendors to ensure inter-rater reliability as well as data accuracy and timely submission
• Contribute to specialized committee or work group meetings in support of process improvements to enhance patient outcomes
• Identify new processes of improvement, opportunities, and trends
• Review and resolve any clinical data discrepancies or outliers on completed abstracts
• Communicate performance considerations and improvement opportunities to correct parties using skillful written and oral communication
• Report findings, opportunities, and trends to management levels
• Apply logical and analytical thinking to solve problems
• Perform detail-oriented analysis and design
• Work independently or within a team environment as a self-starter
• Multi-task and appropriately prioritize responsibilities for a high volume of workload
• Utilize knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy to extract facts from records, especially when chart documentation is of uncertain quality
• Complete certifications (pass exams) if assigned to an abstraction that requires it
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience

Experience

• One year of experience in healthcare or a related field

Physical Requirements

• Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 0–25 lbs
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements
• Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors
• Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication
• Ability to hear alarms and malfunctioning machinery
• Frequent keyboard use and data entry
• Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping
• Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 25–50 lbs
• Rare climbing
