Responsibilities
- Treats patients at the Och Spine Hospital with Orthopedic, Neurological Spine, Rehabilitation Medicine and Pain Management issues in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and/or other situations.
- Works independently or collaboratively with the Attendings, Fellows, and Resident staff as a well as the nurses, therapists, social worker’s and other support personnel who take part in caring for orthopedic spine surgery patients.
- Care coordination for patients needing non-operative treatment.
- Absorb and manage pre-operative care across other practitioners to optimize patients for surgery.
- Absorb and follow up on relevant consultations from other services.
- Perform peer-to-peer consults to obtain surgical pre-authorization for testing or surgeries for all Rounds independently and/or with attendings on all orthopedic inpatients.
- Prepare chart according to protocol and order appropriate x-rays for office hours using the Electronic Medical Record.
- Comply with Meaningful Use Measures.
- Evaluate and diagnose patients.
- Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient's age-specific needs.
- Administer injections/Prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities.
- Maintain and monitor effectiveness of prescribed intervention.
- Remove/apply dressings, sutures, staples, slings and/or braces.
- See post-op patients for wound checks and post-op care and notify attending of findings if abnormal.
- Review post-operative discharge instructions with patients including regarding wound.
- Triage incoming telephone calls; instructs patient and family regarding treatment instruction, then document action taken in the Electronic Medical Record (EPIC).
- Manage and oversee all spine attending in-basket tasks in EPIC.
- Fill out necessary forms, i.e. disability forms, workman's comp, handicap parking as needed; Assist with patient correspondence as needed, i.e. letters of medical necessity, school notes, insurance inquiries, etc.
- Facilitate the patient's transition within and between healthcare settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, discharging and home care including visiting nurse referrals.
- Formulate patient care protocols and critical pathways.
- Participate in accordance with hospital policies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience plus five years of experience.
- New York RN licensure, New York Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), or New York Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensure and/or New Jersey Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensure.
- National Certification & DEA required.
- Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examination.
- Ability to manage and coordinate a patient caseload.
- Work within a collaborative agreement/protocols with a physician and health care team.
- Demonstrate leadership ability to manage patients and interact effectively with peers and physicians.
