About the Role

Join the UVA Health Orthopedic team as a Clinical Athletic Trainer and work in a high-volume, collaborative ambulatory environment alongside orthopedic physicians, APPs, nurses, and other clinical team members. This role provides hands-on care to a diverse orthopedic patient population and offers opportunities to build strong provider partnerships, develop specialized orthopedic skills, participate in casting and splinting, provide patient education, assist with procedures, and improve clinic workflows and patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and room patients, obtain histories, and complete clinical intake.
  • Assist providers with clinic flow and procedures, including applying braces/DME and performing casting and splinting (once competency requirements are met).
  • Provide patient education and coordinate follow-up needs.
  • Develop close working relationships with assigned providers and serve as a clinical resource.
  • Support efficient clinic flow, optimize patient readiness, and enhance access and quality across multiple specialties.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment, advocate for patient safety, and communicate effectively with providers and staff.
  • Engage in continuous improvement activities and model professional behaviors aligned with NATA’s expectations.
  • Promote injury and illness prevention through patient education and wellness initiatives.
  • Conduct systematic assessments, physical examinations, and differential diagnoses to establish individualized plans of care in collaboration with the supervising physician.
  • Interact with interdisciplinary teams during emergency situations following established escalation pathways.
  • Apply evidence-based practice and knowledge of therapeutic exercises, modalities, devices, and manual therapies to educate, treat, and rehabilitate patients.
  • Maintain consistent communication with team members, referring providers, and patients.
  • Exhibit knowledge of athletic training domains, professional ethics, and conduct.

Requirements

  • 1 year of Athletic Training experience required.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Athletic Training or Exercise Physiology/comparable field.
  • Athletic Trainer Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC).
  • Licensed Athletic Trainer by the Virginia Department of Health Professionals.
  • BLS certification required.

Physical Demands

The job requires standing for prolonged periods and frequently bending/stooping/traveling. Ability to lift/push/pull 20–35 lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious diseases.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $23.76 - $38.02 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by qualifications, previous work experience, and education.
