Clinical Associate/Professor of Law- Legal Method and Writing

About the Role

The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law seeks two full-time Clinical Associate/Professors of Law at the rank of Associate/Full Instructional Professional starting in the 2027-28 academic year to join the #1 ranked Legal Method and Writing program in the country. Both entry-level and experienced candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Legal Method and Writing Program is an integral part of the JD program at ASU Law, designed to ensure practice-ready students who are well-equipped to succeed in their legal careers. The program includes two required first-year courses and a varied selection of upper-level elective legal writing courses.

Clinical Associate/Professors of Law in the Legal Method and Writing Program teach analytical, research, writing, and oral communication skills, create assignments and courses, and engage in professional and service activities. Although legal scholarship is not a requirement, it may be considered favorably under Faculty Bylaw I(C).

These positions offer a professional environment with job security exceeding ABA Standard 405(c and d), full-time benefits eligibility, and support for professional development. Entry-level appointments are probationary academic professionals on track to continuing status as Associate Instructional Professionals (Associate Clinical Professor of Law). Experienced candidates meeting criteria may receive an appointment with continuing status (Clinical Professor of Law).

Responsibilities

• Teach JD-level students analytical, research, writing, and oral communication skills necessary for effective law practice.
• Create in-class exercises, memorandum assignments, and motion assignments.
• Provide substantial individualized feedback, including extensive written comments on student papers and frequent student conferences.
• Design first-year and upper-level legal writing and analysis classes.
• Serve on law school committees and projects at the dean’s request.
• Participate in professional activities, such as scholarly presentations, publications, or leadership roles in professional organizations.
• Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to advance the principles of access, excellence, and impact in the ASU charter.

Requirements

• JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
• At least two years of experience in law practice or teaching law to JD students.
• Outstanding legal writing and analysis skills.

• Experience teaching legal method and writing to JD students at a fully accredited law school.
