Clinical Associate - 7S ICU - FLEX

About the Role

The Clinical Associate performs clinical and clerical support, providing basic technical clinical services and clerical support in the delivery of quality patient care as directed by licensed staff, physician, or mid-level practitioner. This role is based in a 12-bed ICU specializing in the care of non-traumatic brain injuries and other diagnoses, including but not limited to Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke, Seizure Disorders, Brain Tumor/Cancer, and Neuromuscular Conditions. The unit also serves as an alternative unit for neurosurgery patients.

This position is variable/flex, working the day shift with every other weekend and rotating holidays.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic clinical services relating to the care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort of patients.
• Exhibits competent knowledge of EMR and assists with chart audits.
• Reviews medical record and provider orders; updates demographics, insurances, answers phones, schedules appointments, receives/relays messages, and inputs refill requests.
• Assists with referrals, authorizations, and pre-authorization as directed by licensed staff, provider, or mid-level practitioner.
• Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies.
• Collects patient assessment data, including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, and current medications for assessment by licensed staff.
• Processes equipment between patients (cleans unit-based equipment and gathers supplies).
• Operates and maintains general office equipment.
• Monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms and performs safety/environmental rounds.
• Transports patients through the office.
• Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance (e.g., refrigerator, code cart checks, glucose meters, equipment room storage).
• Provides basic nursing care and performs advanced technical skills according to established standards.
• Acts as clerical support, receptionist, and unit resource for the healthcare team.
• On monitored units, functions as a nursing assistant and monitor technician.
• For Clinical Transport, provides basic patient care and functions as a monitor technician.
• On non-monitored units, may perform decentralized phlebotomy or removal of femoral arterial sheaths (with proper certification and leadership consent).
• Provides support for department/unit staff scheduling, including lunch assignments.
• Reviews medical records for outstanding orders and notifies nurses of stat orders and medication changes.
• Manages admissions, transfers, and discharges as competencies allow.
• Coordinates patient flow using department/unit-specific software and Intranet.
• Schedules patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
• Welcomes and assists patients and visitors, including registration.
• Demonstrates excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills.
• Receives and screens incoming calls, routing them appropriately and taking accurate messages.
• Serves as a resource for department/unit software systems.
• For Clinical Transport, may transport patients independently, monitor patient condition en route, and interpret EKG rhythms.
• Participates in the sitter process if competencies are appropriate.
• Provides basic nursing care and performs advanced technical skills (e.g., transports patients/supplies, processes specimens).
• For monitor tech competencies: observes cardiac monitors, interprets/document rhythm patterns, reports arrhythmias, and applies monitoring equipment.
• For epilepsy monitoring: observes video, reports alarms, restlessness, repetitive motions, or unsafe patient behavior.
• For phlebotomy competencies: obtains blood specimens, verifies physician orders, processes specimens, and prepares them for delivery.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• If working in a Critical Access Area, Certified Nursing Assistant (N.A.) certification is required (successful completion of a N.A. course or equivalent).
• Successful completion of Monitor Technician courses through Carilion if working in a monitored area.
• Successful completion of phlebotomy and sheath courses through Carilion if working in areas where these skills are required.
• AHA BLS-HCP (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) certification required.
• Effective interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills.
• Organized and self-motivated.
• Knowledge of office procedures and equipment.

Pay

Compensation range: $18.70 - $26.18 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The range does not include benefits or pension plan.
