About the role

The Clinical Assistant is responsible for direct care provided to patients and for contributing to efficient operations in the patient care environment.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients, families, and colleagues promptly in a welcoming and courteous manner. Respond promptly and courteously to requests for assistance from others.
  • Ensure proper patient identification by verbally and visually confirming patients’ two identifiers and maintain patient safety, privacy, confidentiality, and follow guidelines under HIPAA.
  • Obtain and record vital signs, pain screens, weights, and heights accurately into the medical record (Epic). Report changes and/or abnormalities in vital signs, findings outside of defined parameters, and changes in patient’s conditions to the nursing/medical staff in a timely manner.
  • Obtain specimens (urine, stool, sputum, etc.) and ensure accurate labeling in the presence of the patient, using two unique patient identifiers. Instruct patients/family members in collecting specimens.
  • Perform phlebotomy and EKG as applicable and demonstrate competency in the two-patient identifier practice.
  • May precept with specific training.
  • Assist with unit-specific procedural needs as applicable, including bone marrow aspirates.
  • Transport patients, medical records, specimens, blood components, equipment, and supplies in accordance with Institute policy.
  • Ensure all patients on the schedule are accounted for and communicate with providers/patients and colleagues regarding approximate wait times.
  • May assist with research-specific patient data entry, as applicable.
  • Assure all clinical areas have an adequate stock of medical supplies, equipment, and forms. Manage room assignments to maintain patient flow. Strategize the day’s workload and make recommendations accordingly.
  • Assist with medical record preparation.
  • Properly clean and maintain equipment and patient care environment.
  • Safely manage hazards of biomedical waste and chemotherapy waste.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current computer systems used in clinical areas.
  • Utilize Epic to identify patients that require infection control precautions and take appropriate steps accordingly.
  • Understand and utilize the telephone/pager systems, including text paging staff, call system, and emergency response system.
  • Provide proactive instruction and time expectations to patients and families.
  • Communicate patient and family status difficulties and concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Work collaboratively with leadership to determine repair needs of equipment and/or future equipment needs of the unit.
  • Attend mandatory training and education sessions, complete mandatory annual competency assessments, and follow Institute policies.
  • Accept additional responsibilities based on the changing needs of patients, families, staff, and unit.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations appropriately. Maintain BLS certification.
  • Monitor the environment of care with attention to patient safety. Assure compliance with regulatory agency standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED strongly preferred; college coursework preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited clinical assistant program or medical assistant program strongly preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification is also preferred.
  • In some cases, Nurse Students in an accredited Bachelor’s program with at least 2 completed clinical rotations may be considered.
  • Related experience strongly preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA).

Schedule

Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm (start time and end time may vary depending on clinic needs).

Pay

Pay Range: $23.30 - $33.30 per hour.
