Clinical Assistant / Associate Professor (PRD)

About the Role

The Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry provides preclinical and clinical content within the dental school’s pre-doctoral and international dental studies curricula, including Preventive and Minimally Invasive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Implant Dentistry, and Digital Dentistry. This full-time, teacher-clinician non-tenure track role involves teaching, clinical activities, scholarship, research, and service.

Responsibilities

• Teaching:
  • Deliver lectures, seminars, preclinical simulation laboratory teaching, clinical teaching, and computer-based individualized instruction for pre-doctoral and international dental studies students.
• Curriculum Design and Course Directorship:
  • Serve as course director in Operative Dentistry, designing, leading, and managing courses with a focus on minimum intervention/minimally invasive and modern concepts, materials, and techniques.
  • Contribute to curriculum design, including integration with Helix strands.
  • Utilize outcomes assessment, including student and peer evaluation, to improve curricular content and presentation.
  • Assist in setting standards of care for the Dugoni School of Dentistry student clinic.
• Patient Care:
  • Supervise student care of patients in the Dugoni School of Dentistry clinics.
  • Lead and assist in the calibration of faculty in pre-clinical and clinical areas, particularly in restorative dentistry, cariology, and Operative Dentistry.
• Research/Scholarship:
  • Develop research endeavors aligned with personal and professional interests.
  • Produce scholarly publications and presentations.
  • Participate in clinical research projects, sample collection, and other scholarly activities.
• Collaboration and Service:
  • Engage in school, university, professional, and community service opportunities.
  • Participate in national and international collaborations and activities.
  • Embody the culture of humanism and collaboration at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Requirements

• Knowledge Of:
  • Dental school educational processes.
  • Operative, Prosthodontic, and Restorative didactic concepts and techniques.
  • Dental materials and emerging digital applications for clinical operative and restorative treatment.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite, email systems, databases, and adaptability to new technologies.
• Ability To:
  • Effectively manage projects and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and reliability in academic and administrative responsibilities.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and respectful team culture.

• Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience.
  • Clinical experience in all Restorative and Prosthodontic procedures.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring teams.
  • Substantial experience and enthusiasm for course directing in Operative Dentistry.
  • Commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered, and humanistic dental education.
• Education:
  • DDS/DMD or international equivalent.
  • Valid CPR certification.
  • Hold or be eligible for a California Dental License.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge Of:
  • Advanced training/qualifications in Operative Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Dental Materials, Cariology, or a related discipline.
• Experience:
  • Curriculum development, course management, assessment, and student evaluation.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• General: Sufficient motor function to execute movements essential to providing oral health care.
• Specific:
  • Perform palpation, percussion, auscultation, and other diagnostic maneuvers, basic laboratory tests, dental preparations, and diagnostic procedures in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate gross and fine muscular movements, equilibrium, and functional use of touch and vision.
  • Perform basic life support, including CPR, patient transfers, and positioning for patients with disabilities.
  • Physically restrain adults and children lacking motor control.
  • Operate controls, high-speed and low-speed dental handpieces, and hand instrumentation, including scalpels for surgical procedures, within reasonable time frames.

Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens may be anticipated. Personal protective equipment is provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.

Pay

Hiring range: $150,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year. Factors considered include scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, and market/organizational considerations.

Location

This is an in-person role. The successful candidate must be willing to relocate within California, preferably within 25 miles of the San Francisco Pacific campus.
