About the Practice

University Retina is a full-service practice specializing in helping patients heal eyesight-robbing diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula. Led by a team of board-certified ophthalmologists and retina specialists, the practice has locations in Oak Forest, Bedford Park, Lemont, Lombard, and Lincolnwood, Illinois. With a dedication to education, technology, charity, and compassionate care, the University Retina team provides the highest level of retinal care. The physicians diagnose and treat retinal-related conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment repair, and other disorders of the retina, vitreous, and macula. All offices are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring each patient’s treatment plan includes the most current and effective therapies or services available.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all day-to-day activities in a specified practice location, including staffing, clinic flow, patient relations, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Act as a liaison for office staff with managers and senior leadership.
  • Direct clinic flow and oversee clinical activities for assigned doctors.
  • Maintain communication with the clinical training team regarding technicians in training.
  • Participate in direct patient care for at least 70% of scheduled work time each week.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Comply with all practice procedures, protocols, and State and Federal regulations.
  • Determine if documentation supports E/M vs. Eye Code, match applicable ICD-10 codes, and appropriately code in-office procedures.
  • Educate patients regarding conditions treated and surgical procedures performed by the doctor.
  • Maintain inventory PAR levels and order necessary medical and office supplies via D365 ordering process.
  • Complete monthly inventory counts and report procurement concerns to the corporate office.
  • Lead daily team huddles and regularly scheduled monthly team meetings.
  • Contribute to the daily and weekly staff scheduling process and doctor schedule templates.
  • Participate in the annual performance review process for all direct reports, including supervision of technicians' time, attendance, productivity, and training needs.
  • Respond to patient relations inquiries and submit complaint resolutions.
  • Report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
  • Complete additional tasks or projects as needed while maintaining a positive attitude, cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Essential Skills

  • Advanced understanding and ability to complete each skill as required based on iJCAHPO training and generally accepted standards:
    • History Taking
    • Visual Acuity
    • Confrontation Visual Fields
    • Extraocular Motility Assessment: Evaluate ductions, perform cover/uncover & alternating cover testing, document defects, recognize defects, identify potential related pathology, and determine additional testing based on findings.
    • Pupil Assessment: Recognize and identify pupil abnormalities, including APD; use special techniques to identify abnormalities and evaluate associated pathology.
    • Intraocular Pressure Measurement with Goldmann applanation via slit lamp or Perkins tonometer.
    • Manual Lensometry and accurate transposition between minus and plus cylinder as needed.
    • Angle Assessment utilizing the slit lamp microscope.
    • Manual Refractometry: Accurate refinement using the Jackson Cross-Cylinder technique, duochrome testing, and prism measurements.
    • Diagnostic testing including immersion and/or contact A-scan biometry, ultrasound, OCT, visual field, pachymetry, topography, dry eye testing, and fundus photography.
    • Supplemental testing including Amsler Grid, Color Vision, Stereopsis (Randot test), Exophthalmometry, BAT, and PAM.
    • Minor Procedure Assisting: Ability to assist with excisions, suturing, etc., and competency in sterilization requirements and techniques for all associated instruments.
    • Scribing: Accurately document and select coding for all exam types, consults, and surgical procedures.
    • Pharmacology: Ability to identify and assist with prescribing and/or administration of oral and intraocular medications, including understanding their purpose, action, and potential side effects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a leader in an ophthalmic environment.
  • Knowledge in ophthalmic skills, concepts, and a basic overview of ophthalmic diseases.
  • Current iJCAHPO COA certification required; COT or higher preferred.
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to work independently with little oversight or manager presence.

Pay

Pay Range: $26.00–$34.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
