Responsibilities
- Procure blood samples via venous and capillary techniques from patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric.
- Utilize the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests.
- Educate patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum.
- Review orders from providers, maintain accuracy in ordering tests, and occasionally call providers' offices to obtain orders.
- Process specimens appropriately, including centrifuging, separating, and storing at the correct temperature to maintain sample integrity.
- Prepare specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, complete required paperwork, and ensure STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner.
- Perform both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serology areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT.
- Maintain accurate records, including temperature monitoring, quality control for all laboratory testing, and daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance.
- Work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment to care for patients while demonstrating Genesis Health System's standards of behavior.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Additional course work up to 1 year in healthcare studies.
- Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist, or other healthcare studies preferred.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
- Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
- Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
