Responsibilities
- Answers questions and provides teaching as appropriate to scope and licensure or as directed by provider to patients and family members regarding health maintenance and medical illnesses
- Documents appropriate information in the patient’s electronic chart
- Completes patient forms and requests medical records/correspondence to be scanned into the electronic health record
- Schedules referrals for patients with specialists or outpatient as requested by the provider
- Completes appropriate forms or requisitions needed for referrals or lab testing
- Affords assistance to the provider during patient examination, procedures and emergencies
- Provides and documents advice for home care of illness/condition conducting follow up phone calls regarding patient’s health and progress as directed by provider
- Performs diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures
- Prepares and assists provider with patient examination, specimen collection, minor surgical procedures and treatment of the patients, including administration of medication under direct supervision of the provider as appropriate to scope and licensure
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately
- Thoroughly understands testing (lab and procedures) values and relationship to patient status with accountability to take next steps as directed, and as appropriate to scope and licensure
- Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule
- Understands inpatient and outpatient specialty procedures
- Responsible for compliance with precertification requirements
- Seeks direction from provider regarding illness related calls
- Maintains inventory for clinical supplies
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of a nationally accredited medical assistant program (Certificate, diploma or Associate’s Degree) required
- Experience: One year of previous clinical experience in ambulatory clinic preferred
- Licenses/Certifications: Certified or Registered Medical Assistant through one of the following required. National Healthcareer Association, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Certified Medical Assistant, American Registry of Medical Assistants
- Basic Life Support required within ninety days of hire
- IA/IL Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in State(s) where providing care required within ninety days of hire
- IA/IL Dependent Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing Care required within ninety days of hire
