Clinic Assistant
General Description
Provides health care assistance to students. Handles routine and non-routine medical situations within standard medical practices. Work is under general supervision and may require special instruction by a healthcare professional. Contacts are made within and outside the school; may require handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with others. Some judgment is required.
Essential Job Functions
- Admits and discharges sick students in the clinic.
- Administers medication as prescribed, following proper procedures and policies
- Maintains appropriate medication documentation
- Performs specialized healthcare procedures as prescribed
- Treats minor injuries and health emergencies
- Contacts emergency services and parents when necessary; performs first aid and CPR until help arrives
- Aids school nurse in health screenings, examinations and other medical, health and hygiene procedures
- Processes student attendance daily, at principal’s discretion
- Assists with clerical tasks – typing, filing, maintaining records and ordering supplies
- Attends required training, professional development and meetings
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Report Preparation
May run health or attendance reports from the student information system
Contacts
Contacts would be with school personnel as well as parents, students and school nurse
Physical Demands
- Regularly works in a public school setting and regularly works with medical substances, supplies and equipment
- Occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds
- Works with toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes and dust
- Exposure to noise levels ranging from quiet to moderate
Work Environment
- The employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes and dust
- The noise level is quiet to moderate
Qualifications
- Some knowledge of medical conditions, symptoms, medications, treatments and proper hygiene
- Some knowledge of childhood growth and development
- Demonstrated ability to assess illnesses, injuries, seizures and determine appropriate immediate treatment
- Demonstrated ability to obtain appropriate medical assistance to handle emergencies
- Demonstrated ability to perform basic clerical tasks
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner
Additional Job Requirements
- Must be First Aid/CPR, AED certified and maintain current certifications within the first three months of employment
- Strongly prefer, LPN, CNA or EMT
