About the role

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, assist certified professional employees in the media center to enable students to effectively use instructional materials and acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities to take full advantage of library materials and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Assists students in locating reference and other instructional materials, and in developing knowledge, skill, and abilities to gain independence and fully utilize the library materials and resources.
  • Assists in reinforcement in reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, media, and other skills.
  • Assists in maintaining the circulation desk operations and circulation files.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning.
  • Operates audio-visual equipment as needed.
  • Assists in cataloging and filing learning materials.
  • Constructs, copies, distributes, and uses educational materials.
  • Serves as a reference guide for students.
  • Arranges book displays, exhibits, and other items to provide an appropriate learning resource environment and maximize students' interest in reading and learning.
  • Assists with the selection of library materials and resources, and in weeding out old outdated materials and books.
  • Assists in the utilization and maintenance of instructional and non-instructional library equipment, including personal computers.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Willingness to promote a positive atmosphere in the Media Center.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Able to take initiative on projects and work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Computer knowledge essential; word processing skills required.
  • Willing to help students and staff use the Internet and library.
  • Enjoy working with elementary school-age students.
  • Dependable, flexible, self-starter who can deal with multi-tasking situations.
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Skills

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Effective writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to follow directives of teacher, media specialist, or other supervisor, and assist students with respect to instructional and non-instructional tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees, and others.
  • Ability to use personal computers and instruct students in their use (including creating documents, word processing, and using the Internet to conduct research).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and perform complex arithmetic operations.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust/focus.
  • Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate.
  • Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
