GreenvilleOnline.com/The Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a dynamic sports reporter to cover Clemson athletics in a highly competitive market. This role is based in Clemson, S.C., and is part of the USA TODAY Network's South Region, known for high-level collaboration among college markets.

About the role

The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience, with a proven ability to develop sources, drive storytelling, and evolve written beat coverage based on audience tendencies and metrics. We want a self-starter and a good teammate who is eager to enhance our coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Grow subscriptions through topics, timeliness, and storytelling.
  • Become the leading voice in your area of expertise.
  • Connect with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, etc.).
  • Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Work with the region sports director and deputy region sports directors to evaluate performance using metrics and develop plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborate with the content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (e.g., photos, videos, and graphics).
  • Capture basic photos and video as needed.
  • Promote your personal brand, the brands of colleagues, and the institutional brand.
  • Provide great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • College or other high-level sports beat experience preferred; strong digital skills required.
  • Ability to develop strong sourcing and produce content across all formats, including social media, mobile, desktop, video, television, and print.
  • Proficiency on social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Experience shooting and editing photos and video on an iPhone.
  • Strong communication skills, news judgment, and headline-writing ability.
  • Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure.
  • Strong writing, spelling, and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Comfort building a beat and communicating with athletes and coaches.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
